A brand new PlayStation 5 Pro is on its way! Sony announced the new PS5 Pro at a technical presentation this morning, confirming those pesky rumours we’ve been hearing all year.
The new PS5 Pro is promising better performance, faster speeds, and increased game storage. For the patient gamers reading, the good news is that you can still play the latest games on your current PS5. However, newer releases will be tailored towards this new console, which might strain your current hardware. This should also (hopefully) mark the death of PS4 releases as the console gets sunsetted.
But what’s justifying this new PlayStation model? And will it be worth upgrading from your standard model? Well, let’s take a look at the promised specs here.
The specs
The PS5 is coming with three big improvements: a larger GPU, which promises to render games 45% faster, advanced ray-tracing, and PlayStation’s new AI-driven upscaling method, Spectral Super Resolution. Mark Cerny, PS5 Lead Architect, says these upgrades will remove the choice between graphical fidelity and performance. With the current PS5, if you want your game to look jaw-droppingly good, you might get some staggered frames and long loading screens. In the future, this might not be the case.
The PS5 Pro will also have a 2TB SSD, which means you can play more than three games installed on your PlayStation.
Unfortunately, the PS5 will not come with a disk drive and will be a digital downloads-only console. However, you can purchase a disk drive and place it under the faceplate, just like the PS5 Slim.
If you thought only new games would be able to take advantage of this new tech, you’d be wrong. The console will launch with a new Game Boost feature, which Sony has said may stabilise or improve the performance of over 8,500 PS5 and PS4 games. This means we might finally see that Bloodborne remake sometime soon (I am at critical levels of copium).
In the presentation, we saw Cerny showing off enhanced versions of Horizon Forbidden West running with improved graphics and Gran Turismo 7 managing a consistent 60 fps with ray-traced reflections between cars. Other games set to be released as enhanced versions include Alan Wake 2, Assassin’s Creed Shadows, Demon’s Souls, Dragon’s Dogma 2, Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth, Marvel’s Spider-Man 2, Ratchet & Clank: Rift Apart, The Crew Motorfest, and The First Descendant.
How much will the PS5 Pro cost in Australia?
Australian prices haven’t been announced yet, but the USD starting price will be $699.99, which might look like $1,052 AUD RRP.
Update: Sony announced in a press release that the console would cost $1,199.95 AUD at launch. This does not include the verticle stand or external disk drive.
This is a steep rise from the original console. For comparison, the standard disc edition of the PS5 Slim currently retails for $799.95, while the Digital Edition is priced at $679.95.
When will the PS5 Pro be released in Australia?
The PS5 Pro will officially release on November 7th.
Pre-orders will open on September 26th, so you better start saving that pocket money. While we shouldn’t see the same stock issues that the original PS5 suffered, the PS5 Pro is the first console to prove a significant update to this current generation of gaming. So, we can expect plenty of enthusiasts wanting to get their hands on one as soon as possible.

I won’t lie; while these upgrades seem a little understated, I think they will boast a solid performance boost. Playing a game on any hardware, this current console generation can feel like a coin flip on whether or not your game will perform well, even with high-end specs.
However, consoles usually run consistently and have fewer performance problems. The PS5 Pro, on paper, is an even more future-proof console that will avoid performance issues with framerate drops and loading times.
I’m not sure if it’s a day-one purchase for me, but I’m keen to see what the new console generation brings with these hefty upgrades.
