The new Lord Mayors dominating the top positions on Northern Ireland's councils

The last fortnight has seen the selection of 11 new mayors and council chairs across Northern Ireland's local authorities.

DUP councillors will wear the mayoral chain of office in four councils during 2022/23 while Sinn Fein also have four chairs.

Alliance now have two mayors while the SDLP holds the top position in one local authority.

The UUP hold the post of deputy mayor in three councils.

The Local Government (Northern Ireland) Act states that councils’ annual general meetings must take place in June.

In 2020, the Covid-19 pandemic meant mayors and deputy mayors began their year in office in unique circumstances as the first to be inaugurated through a virtual meeting streamed live online.

Last year there was some return to normality with appointments still being made at a livestreamed AGM in town halls but with a small number of party representatives and staff members present in the chambers.

DUP Councillor Scott Carson has been elected the new Mayor of Lisburn & Castlereagh City Council and will be joined by Deputy Mayor, Alliance's Michelle Guy (LCCC)

Belfast’s new lord mayor is Sinn Fein councillor Tina Black who has said she wants to celebrate the diversity of the city during her year in office.

She took over from the Alliance Party’s Michael Long, who was only installed as first citizen a month ago when he replaced party colleague Kate Nicholl after she was elected an MLA in the Assembly election.

Mr Long had the shortest term of office of any mayor on Belfast City. Council.

The new deputy mayor is Alliance Party councillor Michelle Kelly.

Meanwhile Derry City and Strabane District Council have sworn in a new mayor for this year, Sinn Fein Councillor Sandra Duffy, while the SDLP's Angela Dobbins has been sworn in as her deputy for the next 12 months.

The DUP’s Paul Greenfield has accepted the mayoral chain in Armagh City, Banbridge and Craigavon Borough Council and under D’Hondt, the method for allocating party seats, the DUP will also hold the office of deputy lord mayor, with Councillor Tim McClelland elected.

DUP councillor Scott Carson has been selected as the new mayor of Lisburn and Castlereagh City Council and will be joined by deputy mayor, Councillor Michelle Guy of Alliance.

Ards and North Down has appointed the Alliance Party’s Karen Douglas as its new mayor alongside UUP Councillor Craig Blaney in the post of deputy.

Alliance Alderman Noel Williams has taken over the chain of office at Mid and East Antrim Borough Council with the DUP’s Beth Adger taking over the position of deputy mayor.

Sinn Fein's Córa Corry now heads Mid Ulster District Council, assisted by the DUP's Frances Burton as deputy chair.

Elsewhere the new chair of Fermanagh and Omagh District Council is Councillor Barry McElduff of Sinn Féin while the UUP's Allan Rainey was nominated as vice chair for the incoming year.

In Antrim and Newtownabbey, the DUP’s Stephen Ross is the new mayor and the UUP’s Leah Smyth will deputise for the incoming year.

Taking over the top roles on Newry, Mourne and Down for the next year is SDLP Councillor Michael Savage who has been elected chairperson while Cllr Aoife Finnegan of Sinn Féin is his deputy.

Finally, the new mayor of Causeway Coast and Glens Borough Council is the DUP's Ivor Wallace while the incoming deputy is Sinn Fein Councillor Kathleen McGurk.
