The Netflix series that has fans gripped as the Murdaugh Murders case reaches its climax

It's a case that has gripped the world - and thanks to Netflix, followers can get an in-depth rundown of events leading up to the shocking trial which saw Alex Murdaugh sentenced to life in prison.

The disgraced lawyer, 54, pleaded not guilty to shooting dead his wife and their son - Maggie, 52, and Paul, 22 - in June 2021 on the family's hunting estate in South Carolina, US.

However, a jury didn't believe his testimony and found him guilty on all counts on Thursday after less than three hours of deliberation.

On Friday, judge Clifton Newman handed him two life sentences, which will run consecutively.

While the case has been closely followed in the US with hoards of reporters - both amateur and professional - turning up at the courtroom each day, it's gained wider attention due to the Netflix documentary Murdaugh Murders: A Southern Scandal.

Released last month, the three-part series dives deeper into the build-up to the case, including a number of other shocking tragedies that some believe are linked to the family.

According the streaming giant, the series looks at the "shocking tragedies shatter a tight-knit South Carolina community and expose the horrifying secrets of its most powerful family".

The opening edition looks at the details surrounding the disappearance and death of Mallory Beach, a female who went missing after Alex's son Paul's boat crashed.

Next showcases the aftermath of the tragedy and looks into how Alex seemingly tried to "damage control" the event, while also looking into events two years later which leave Alex facing his own case.

In the final segment, the series looks at past "accidents" which occurred and spurred further accusations against the once-powerful family.

The intense production has won rave reviews from the critics with fans flocking to social media to praise the series.
