The nerve-wracking roundabout no one knows how to use

Opinions on the correct way to use a complicated Merseyside roundabout have sparked debate on social media.

For learner drivers taking their test in Southport, one of the most nerve-wracking moments is trying to navigate Kew roundabout, which has long frustrated motorists with many choosing to avoid it. The area is a busy route as it is a main entrance to the town from Ormskirk and West Lancashire.

It has prompted a debate in a local Facebook group about how to navigate the roundabout correctly. The post reads: “If you were driving from Tesco Extra taking the third exit towards Thatch and Thistle... what lane would you wait in at the roundabout, left or right. Many people seem to use either and it drives me mad.”

The post has since racked up more than 61 likes and 878 comments, with one person saying: “Right lane, indicating to turn right. Then at the second junction, mirror, indicate to turn left and manoeuvre.”

Another person replied: “It’s not a right turn. If you look at the roundabout like a clock you only go in the right lane if it’s after 12pm. If it’s before or 12 it’s the left lane. Simple.”

One person said: “It’s the right lane... I’m sick of getting nearly hit. The Highway Code when I passed in 1997 was more than two junctions or past 12 o‘clock then you take the inside lane of the roundabout.”

Last year Sefton Council welcomed ideas for possible improvements to the roundabout and surrounding areas. Labelled as the Southport Eastern Access Scheme, the council hoped to ease congestion for motorists as well as to revamp the cycling and pedestrian infrastructure. However, so far nothing has changed.

One person said: “Left because it is straight over. If the exit is after the 12 o'clock position then you would be in the right lane. Like you should be when you exit Scarisbrick New Road and head towards Ormskirk."

Another person commented: “Either, just make sure you do it correctly. A lot of people who go in the left lane, literally just go straight so they go into the right lane anyway. If your coming the other way (from Meols Cop Road to Tesco) you go in the right lane so naturally that would make me think you should be on the left but I'm happy for people to use either as long as they stay in lane and indicate correctly.”
