The mystery of Swansea's half-finished Greggs drive-thru

Mystery surrounds the arrival of a drive-thru Greggs bakery in Swansea after work on site ground to a halt and the company won't say why.

Construction of the branch, near McDonald's and Starbucks in Fabian Way, initially began in March, 2021, and staff at the bakery giant also confirmed that it had been scheduled to open that July and would be Wales' first drive-thru Greggs.

At the time, estate surveyor at Greggs, Steve Jones said: "We are delighted to be bringing drive-thrus to our customers in Wales with the first scheduled to open in Swansea in July [2021].

"We anticipate that our drive-thru sites will become popular with busy families and people on the go. It is a resilient formula in general and has proven to be especially convenient for people during the pandemic restrictions. "

Whilst Covid would inevitably have affected construction, locals claim builders haven't returned to the site for some months, and Newport ended up beating Swansea to the crown of first drive-thru Greggs in Wales.

A new store opened in Port Road, Maesglas on January 10, 2022, creating 22 jobs and welcoming hundreds of customers in its first week.

As well as driving up to order, customers can also place click-and-collect orders for the Newport site via the Greggs app. The shop’s opening hours are Monday to Saturday from 6am to 7pm and Sunday 7am to 5pm.

So what's happening at the Swansea site?

In short, it doesn't look like a lot is happening at the Swansea site.

The area appears to be deserted, with building materials piling up - and what appears to be discarded rubbish from the nearby McDonald's outlet.

During our visit to the site on Tuesday, there were no construction workers to be seen anywhere and no-one from Greggs either.

So why hasn't construction been completed at the Swansea drive-thru?

WalesOnline asked representatives of Greggs why the planned Fabian Way drive-thru store hadn't opened yet and why work seemed to have come to a halt.

A Greggs spokesperson said: "We still plan to open the Swansea drive-thru location but had to postpone it for the time being. We will be sure to share any information in due course."

Asked when Greggs hoped to open the store, the spokesperson added that they did not yet have this information. They also didn't appear to know why work appeared to have halted for several months.
