A woman and two children who tragically drowned in a waterway in Sydney’s south-west on Saturday have been identified as Hoai Nguyen, 32, and her two children, Mitchell, seven, and Hazel, five.
On Saturday, emergency services were called to a pier in Floyd Bay in Georges River at Lansvale at about 10.15am after the trio were spotted struggling in the water.
Hoai was pulled shortly after emergency services arrived, but unfortunately, she couldn’t be saved. Several hours later, at about 2pm, the bodies of the siblings were found metres from the jetty where they fell in.
Following the tragedy, a family friend known as Sarah Vu set up a GoFundMe to help the surviving family, which includes a father and a one-year-old baby.
Per 9News, the publication understands the father was at work when the tragic incident and only heard about the news when he found police at his home.
“I am reaching out to you during a time of unimaginable sorrow. A beloved mother and her two young children tragically drowned today in Lansvale leaving behind a profound void in our hearts and a father and baby who is only 1 year old,” the GoFundMe description reads.
“I am fundraising on behalf of Hoai(32), Mitchell (7) and Hazel (5) and Macario(1). We hope to raise funds to aid the funeral and to assist the father to look after young Macario in this time of grief.”
With a goal of $40,000, the GoFundMe has already raised more $22,875 in donations.
An investigation into how the family ended up in the water is ongoing.
