Joey Jordison, the drummer, songwriter and founding member of legendary metal band Slipknot, has died aged just 46.
The band was founded by Jordison, percussionist Shawn Crahan and bassist Paul Gray (who also sadly passed away in 2010) in 1995 in Des Moines, Iowa and quickly achieved chart success all over the globe. Slipknot were notorious for their intimidating mask and boiler suit outfits, intense stage performances and controversial lyrics but adopted a loyal legion of fans and are still releasing music to this day.
Jordison, who also formed Murderdolls, left Slipknot in 2013 and was regarded by many to be one of the best drummers of his generation. Live performances would often involve him having to be strapped to his seat so he could carry on drumming while his stage spun and tilted at a 90-degree angle.

A statement from his family said: “Joey’s death has left us with empty hearts and feelings of indescribable sorrow. To those that knew Joey, understood his quick wit, his gentle personality, giant heart and his love for all things family and music.”
This sentiment has been widely shared throughout the metal music community with Slipknot and their lead singer Corey Taylor and Shawn Crahan posting a single black square on Twitter to mark Jordison’s death.

Many other metal acts and people within in the music industry also paid tribute to Jordison, complimenting his musical ability but also his gracious personality.
Joey Jordison was better upside down than any other metal drummer sitting normally.

We are saddened by the news of the passing of our dear friend, Joey Jordison. From being able to share the stage with him numerous times throughout the years to Matt standing alongside him for the Roadrunner United album. He was always super gracious to all of us in Trivium. pic.twitter.com/LS8E06QT0A

I remember watching a live VHS of Slipknot when I was in Junior Highschool and when the arena lights went out and came on with double bass and an upside down drum set illuminating a pentagram I immediately went to Hot Topic and became a metal head. Thank you Joey Jordison! RIP ❤️ pic.twitter.com/dihOdgkQVJ

The brightest stars burn out the quickest. Gutted to see the passing of Joey Jordison, and the entire metal community is feeling this devastating blow. It’s amazing how one influential person can make every musician step up their game. Please say hi to Paul for me Joey 💔

I was so nervous the entire day before this interview with #Slipknot took place even though I knew the songs and band.

It was in front of a pretty big audience at Hollywood and Highland in LA.
We had a good time, still remember like it was yesterday.

Fairly sure that if Slipknot didn’t exist that my life wouldn’t have gone in the direction that it’s gone in. And I’m also fairly sure that if Joey Jordison hadn’t been on drums when I first got into them, that they wouldn’t have been the same band.

I owe ya Joey! #RestInPeace
RIP @thejoeyjordison One of the most ferocious and entertaining bands we ever played with. What a drummer! Rock has lost another legend 💔 #joeyjordison #slipknot https://t.co/CfQy6Pjn5T

Very sad to hear about Joey Jordison. Never crossed paths but he was an incredible musician. 46 is no age. RIP.

R.I.P Joey Jordison, an absolute legend who changed the game not only for drums, but metal music as a whole.

Many fans have been remembering some of Jordison’s greatest moments, complimenting his drumming skills and overall changing their lives.
imagine being able to do this and not being distracted by the lad standing beside you in a clown mask knocking the shit out of a beer keg with a baseball bat.

when I discovered Slipknot as a teenager, I immediately became obsessed. I especially was very intrigued by the drummer; a man with long greasy black/red hair and a white face mask painted with nail polish.

Slipknot changed my life.

Gutted to hear about Joey Jordison’s death today, a phenomenal drummer.
Going to listen to my 3 favourite albums by them today. #JoeyJordisonRIP pic.twitter.com/lUy14QBaJt
I literally bought an 8 piece drum set when I was like 13 because I wanted to be the next Joey Jordison.

Many have also recalled when he stepped in for Metallica drummer Lars Ulrich at the 2004 Download festival and didn’t miss a beat.
Metallica are headlining Download later in the day but they need a drummer and you get that call. That was Joey Jordison - a giant who leaves giant footprints behind him. What a sad, sad loss.
— Alexander Milas (@alexandermilas) July 27, 2021
Shit news about Joey Jordison. Me and a mate saw Slipknot at Download Festival in 2004. It's quite a famous story now, but he then stepped in to cover for a missing Lars Ulrich. It ended up as one of the maddest/best Metallica sets ever. https://t.co/9AjPETxzGE
— Paul (Maych) Machin (@ThePaulMachin) July 28, 2021
RIP Joey Jordison. Great memories of him at the peak of his powers with Slipknot but maybe the most impressive performance was filling in at no notice for Lars Ulrich during Metallica's 2004 Download show. He raised their performance and peppered their songs with his own style.

Jordison also performed with the likes of Rob Zombie and Korn. In 2006 Slipknot also won a Grammy award for Best Metal Performance for their single ‘Before I Forget.’
