The most delicious dessert places in Newcastle according to TripAdvisor

Sometimes you just can't beat a decadent dessert to satisfy your cravings - and Newcastle dwellers are spoiled for choice when it comes to finding top-rated treats.

Whether you’re after a gooey brownie, an indulgent cake or you’re more partial to some ice cream, there are heaps of places in Newcastle that can satisfy your sweet tooth. And what's more, several places in the city have earned hundreds of glowing reviews from visitors over the years for their food.

With the snacks at these venues being dubbed “unbelievable”, “unbeatable” and “utterly fabulous”, they’re definitely a must-try for anyone who loves all things sweet. Here are the top-rated places to grab some delicious dessert according to Tripadvisor reviews - and from creperies to patisseries across the city centre, Jesmond, Heaton and more, you’ll only find these independents in Newcastle.

Monsieur Crepe Café

One of Heaton’s finest hidden gems, Monsieur Crepe tops the Tripadvisor list when it comes to sweet treats. Owners Marc and Gary set up their cosy café in 2016 after being inspired by the creperies of France.

Monsieur Crepe serves up plenty of crepes and pancakes topped with gooey goodness like melted chocolate, salted caramel and syrup, as well as a tempting collection of fresh cakes and afternoon tea. “The food is unbelievable - if you haven’t been, you’re missing a gem!” one Tripadvisor reviewer said, while a second praised Monsieur Crepe’s “top-notch customer service”.

Cake Stories

This family-run business can be found in Jesmond and Hoults Yard as well as offering UK-wide delivery, and specialises in more than 100 different types of cake. Cake Stories set out to provide a “wholesome alternative” to the pubs and bars of Newcastle, and promises that visitors to their cafes will be “welcomed like old friends”.

Some of their most popular bakes include the Oreo Monster Cake and the Caramel Chocolate Smash, as well as their signature Brownios - a range of sweet fillings sandwiched between two brownie shells and dipped in chocolate. One visitor praised Cake Stories on Tripadvisor for having “some of the best brownies I’ve ever eaten”, while another called it “my favourite spot in Jesmond”.

Les Petits Choux

A charming coffee shop and patisserie run by a mum and her two daughters, Les Petits Choux is a popular choice for sweet-tooths in Newcastle’s city centre and ranks third on the Tripadvisor list. The Leazes Crescent venue bakes treats fresh to order from their on-site kitchen to serve up the best of home baking.

As well as their signature choux pastries, the cafe also offers a huge range of cakes, tarts, brownies and more. One Tripadvisor review urged: “You must try one of their cakes”, and another said that their bespoke birthday cake from Les Petits Choux was “utterly fabulous in every way”.

Mimi’s Ice Cream Emporium

Mimi’s has earned a spot in the top five among Tripadvisor reviewers for the mouth-watering ice cream they offer. The show-stopping range of fresh flavours includes Nutella, Oreo, Jammy Dodger and Jaffa Cake, as well as plenty more to choose from.

One glowing Tripadvisor review said: “Friendly, welcoming, polite owners and staff - well worth a visit”. Another called Mimi’s ice cream “quite possibly the best I’ve had this side of the UK”.

Mark Toney’s has been a North East favourite for over a century, first brought to the region by Giovanni Marcantonio in 1892 and passed down through the generations as the ice cream business proved a huge hit. You can now find Mark Toney parlours on both Grainger and Percy Street in the city centre, run by Giovanni’s great-grandson Antony.

Mark Toney boasts an incredible 40 flavours of ice cream on its website, with highlights including Belgian chocolate chunk, banoffee swirl, and key lime pie. “I don’t think I’ve ever found a better ice cream place than Mark Toney’s”, one customer said on Tripadvisor.

Hedley’s Riverside Coffee Shop

Hedley’s can be found in Tyne Riverside Country Park, offering a dog-friendly spot for refreshments after a picturesque walk or bike ride. As well as sweet options including a selection of fresh cakes, the savoury lunch dishes have also been highly praised on Tripadvisor.

“Great service, friendly atmosphere and the best cheese scones this side of the Tyne!” one Tripadvisor reviewer wrote, while others said that the carrot cake and lemon drizzle were among their favourites. Another visitor gave Hedley’s the honour of having the “world’s best toasties” in their review.

Pet Lamb Patisserie

Founded in 2009 by best friends and self-taught bakers Katie and Kay, Pet Lamb’s treats can be found in the Grainger Market. Serving up brownies that come in a range of indulgent flavours from red velvet cheesecake to Eton mess, as well as blondies and cookie pies - plenty to satisfy sweet-tooths.

One customer said that Pet Lamb’s brownies are “unbeatable”, adding that “the cupcakes look so decadent - clearly made with love”. Another Tripadvisor reviewer praised the cupcakes as “simply delicious”, while someone else recommended the Nutella brownies.

The Great British Cupcakery

Mother and daughter team Carole and Leoni created this Quayside cupcakery in 2012, and have since baked thousands of beautiful cakes for every occasion. Visitors can try a range of delights in their Queen Street café, from cupcakes to an afternoon tea offering.

One Tripadvisor review loved the cupcakery’s “pretty, bright, really cheerful and inviting” parlour, while another dubbed it “the most Instagrammable cupcake shop ever”. A third visitor said that the cakes had “the best sponge that I have tasted in a long time”.
