The property market is extremely tough at the moment, especially for first time buyers and young families. In the last few years it has become more and more difficult for people to get onto the property ladder, or to find a new home that is of good value.
House prices are soaring up and down the country and unfortunately Greater Manchester is no exception. However there are certain parts of the region where you can find properties with reasonably cheap price tags if you know exactly where to look.
With help from Rightmove 's latest house price data, we have singled out the most affordable area in each of Greater's Manchester's 10 boroughs to help those who are hunting for a bargain home.

Bolton
Those searching for a home in the Bolton borough can typically expect to pay around £201,174 for a standard property. But if you want to find somewhere to live that is a bit cheaper, you should try Farnworth.
The large town is the cheapest place to live in the borough, with an average house price of £145,728. A quick glance on Rightmove shows that at the moment you can buy this three-bed semi-detached property for just £125,000.
Farnworth benefits from being close to the M61 motorway with the busy A666 running through the area. It also has two rail stations - Farnworth and Moses Gate - and a number of parks including Farnworth Park, Ellesmere Park, Bradford Street Recreation Ground and Doe Hey Playing Fields.
Bury
Properties in the borough of Bury had an average price of £231,996 over the last year, however in Radcliffe you can bag a home for around £190,400.
In Bury's cheapest area, this two-bed semi-detached home is currently on the market for £150,000. Radcliffe is a busy market town with important historical and listed buildings, including Radcliffe Tower and the Church of St Mary.
Manchester
House hunters looking to buy in Manchester can expect to buy a property for an average price of £249,576. But if that sounds unaffordable, Harpurhey is your best best.
The inner city suburb has an average house price of just £129,750, and although there are no properties on the market here at this price or lower the moment, any that go up for sale are sure to be snapped up quick.
Once named the most-deprived neighbourhood in England, Harpurhey has recently seen significant investment in its district centre and through the new Manchester Communication Academy - one of the city's largest schools.
Oldham
Oldham is one of Greater Manchester's cheaper boroughs to live, with properties having an average price of £179,412 over the last year. If you want to find a bargain home, your best chance is to look in Hollinwood.
The area has an average house price of £154,635, and at the moment there are a few homes for sale at this price or less - such as this two-bed terrace house listed for £100,000 and a two-bed semi-detached bungalow for £115,000.
Hollinwood is divided by the A62 road and borders the towns of Chadderton and Failsworth.
Rochdale
Properties in the Rochdale borough have an overall average house price of £191,282, but in Castleton, you can purchase a home for around £146,136.
In Rochdale's cheapest area you can buy properties such as this semi-detached three-bed home, which is currently on the market for £140,000.
Castleton is a former mill town and was the site of Rochdale Castle. It grew rapidly with the arrival of the Rochdale Canal and before then it was known as Blue Pits Village.
Salford
In the borough of Salford, you can typically expect to pay around £218,736 for a standard home. Yet if you look on the market in Little Hulton, the average house price is much less at just £160,052.
Properties on the market in Salford's cheapest area at the moment include a range of two and three-bedroom terraced homes priced between £95,000 and £139,950.
Former mining area Little Hulton is bordered by Farnworth, Bolton, to the north and Walkden to the east.
Stockport
Stockport's cheapest area to buy a home is Reddish, where the average house price is £203,238 in comparison to the borough's average price of £283,544.
Reddish is one of the borough's largest areas which had rapid development during the industrial revolution. In Reddish at the moment you can buy this two-bed terrace for £180,000 or a one-bed apartment for £130,000.
Tameside
Properties in the Tameside borough had an overall average price of £196,594 over the last year. If you are looking for a bargain, Ashton-under-Lyne is the cheapest area to buy with an average house price of £174,325.
The market town is at the heart of Tameside with its main council offices, art gallery, museums and hospital as well as a popular market and shopping centre.
On the market at the moment is this two-bed semi-detached home for £170,000.
Trafford
In Trafford, which is Greater Manchester's most expensive borough, homes are priced at a staggering £375,869 on average. However if you want to live in Trafford but can't afford those prices, Partington is a much cheaper option.
Homes here have an average house price of £180,015, making it much more affordable than the rest of the borough.
Partington is a town ten miles south-west of Manchester city centre. Within the boundaries of the historic county of Cheshire, it lies on the southern bank of the Manchester Ship Canal opposite Cadishead.
Wigan
Wigan is Greater Manchester's most affordable borough to live, with house prices just £169,462 over the last year. The cheapest part of the borough is Platt Bridge, where you can expect to buy a house for around £119,337.
In the residential area at the moment, this two-bed terraced home is on the market for a bargain price of just £90,000, and you can get a three-bed semi-detached property for just £125,000.
