'The money they've spent' - Newcastle make Liverpool transfer claim ahead of summer window

Newcastle United co-owner Jamie Reuben has stressed the importance of being 'shrewd and disciplined' in the transfer window as they battle the likes of Liverpool.

The Magpies are amongst the richest clubs in the world after their takeover, but Financial Fair Play regulations mean that unlimited spending is not possible.

Eddie Howe's side secured Champions League football with a fourth place finish and will look to make additions to their squad in the summer window.

Bosses at Newcastle have stressed the importance of complying with Financial Fair Play since they bought the club from Mike Ashley.

"In terms of bringing in a player, you have to be smart, shrewd and opportunistic," Reuben told the Business of Sport podcast. "You have to be ready to pull the trigger quickly, know what you want and be strategic. A lot of thought goes into it, what you don't want is a ton of blanket offers, you have to be controlled and disciplined.

"It's definitely challenging, especially when you see the other clubs and the money they've spent. FFP means we can't do that just yet, so we have to make sure our pound goes further than Manchester City, Chelsea or Liverpool."
