Large parts of Wales continue to be battered by heavy rain and strong winds - with the adverse weather expected to carry on throughout Tuesday night and into Wednesday. After a yellow weather warning for rain which was in force from Monday night until Tuesday morning, affecting eastern and central parts of Wales as well as parts of north Wales, heavy rain has continued to fall throughout the country on Tuesday afternoon and into the evening.
Furthermore, a separate yellow warning for wind will come into force at 7am on Wednesday, covering large parts of west Wales from Anglesey and Gwynedd in the north to Carmarthenshire and Pembrokeshire in the south. Ceredigion and Conwy are also subject to the weather warning, along with parts of Swansea. The warning was originally in place until 6pm on Wednesday, but it has been extended up until 8pm. There are no Met Office warnings affecting Wales up until Wednesday morning, but that’s not to say that the weather will be bright and breezy up until that point. Tuesday evening saw a number of traffic issues on roads in south Wales as the weather caused disruption in several areas. The M48 Severn Bridge was closed on Tuesday afternoon due to strong winds, while a slip road at junction 43 of the M4 near Neath was shut due to flooding.

From 5pm on Tuesday, Cardiff is likely to see 80% chance of rain, followed by 70% chance of rain between 6pm until 9pm. Rain is likely to continue in the Welsh capital into the early hours, with some respite expected at around 4am as the likelihood of rain drops to below 5%. While that respite will continue throughout most of Wednesday morning, rain is again expected to come down from early on Wednesday afternoon, with 80% chance of rainfall in the evening, with between 40% and 70% likelihood for the rest of the night.
It’s a similar story further west in Wales, with 90% chance of rain in Swansea and Carmarthenshire from 6pm on Tuesday, although that is expected to ease off by around 9pm. Overnight should again be drier in parts but heavy rain will lash down from early on Wednesday afternoon, with again a 90% chance of rain between 2pm and 4pm. Along the coast in Aberystwyth, Tuesday night will see an 80% chance of rain between 6pm and 8pm, with higher chance of continued rainfall throughout the night than in other parts of the country. Drier weather is forecast for Wednesday morning before the heavy rain returns in the mid-afternoon, with chance of rain at between 80% and 90%.
In north Wales, Gwynedd will see heavy rain on Tuesday between 7pm and 10pm, and again at around 8am on Wednesday, before some drier spells make way for more rain in the mid-afternoon. In Swansea, Carmarthenshire, and all away up the west coast of Wales, even when the rain stops on Wednesday, those areas will be subject to strong winds, with the warning from the Met Office being in place throughout the day.
According to that yellow warning, people in affected areas can expect: “Some delays to road, rail, air and ferry transport are likely, probably some bus and train services affected, with some journeys taking longer, delays for high-sided vehicles on exposed routes and bridges likely, and some short term loss of power and other services is possible.” It’s also “likely that some coastal routes, sea fronts and coastal communities will be affected by spray and/or large waves”. According to the Met Office’s chief meteorologist, Neil Armstrong, “Much of the UK can expect a spell of strong southerly winds on Wednesday, but the warning area highlights where gusts of up to 65mph will be and therefore where there are likely to be some travel delays.”
