The revolutionary film series used cutting edge effects to portray the journey of Neo (Keanu Reeves) a seemingly ordinary man who lives a seemingly ordinary life until he is approached by a criminal named Morpheus (Laurence Fishburne) and his associate Trinity (Carrie-Anne Moss).
From there, Neo discovered that not only did he live in a virtual world created by Machines in a future where humans are at threat of extinction, but he could be The One to save them.
But when should we expect the follow-up?

The Matrix 4 release date
The Matrix 4 does not currently have a release date set.
The film is set to begin production in 2020, so expect the film in late 2021 at the very earliest.

Keanu Reeves as Neo
The John Wick star is confirmed to reprise his role as The One in the fourth film.
Having seemingly sacrificed himself, Neo succumbed from wounds to reboot The Matrix and was taken away by the Machines at the conclusion of The Matrix Revolutions.
The Oracle revealed that she believed they would see Neo again in The Matrix.
Carrie-Anne Moss as Trinity
The Jessica Jones star will return as the beloved of Neo and warrior who died in her mission to be ensure his survival in the conclusion of The Matrix Revolutions.
Further cast members have yet to be confirmed but there has been a report that a younger iteration of Morpheus may feature instead of a return for actor Laurence Fishburne.
The Matrix 4 trailer
The Matrix has not even entered production yet so we have no new footage.

The Matrix 4 plot
We know very little about the plot of the film at this stage.
The war against the Machines and Neo stopping the threat against the human race seemed to be resolved in the conclusion of The Matrix Revolutions.
However, The Oracle mentioned that we would probably see Neo again and that The Architect agreed humans could leave The Matrix if they wished.
The Architect mentioned that the peace will “last as long as it can”.
Is the war beginning once again?
How Neo and Trinity will be resurrected remains to be seen.
