Rory McIlroy finally won the Masters, fulfilling a lifelong dream and and putting years of hurt behind him, to complete the career grand slam in the most dramatic fashion.
McIlroy’s final round swung back and forth and he only needed a par on the 18th to win the title in regulation. But he missed a five-foot par putt to instead set up a play-off against Ryder Cup teammate Justin Rose, who had carded a magical 66 to set the clubhouse target at -11.
Yet the Northern Irishman somehow regained his composure and played the 18th brilliantly in the sudden-death play-off, sinking a four-footer for birdie to deny Rose, adding the Masters to his Open, US Open and two PGA Championship crowns. He is only the sixth man in the history of golf to win all four majors.
It ended an 11-year major drought that was full of heartbreak and near misses and McIlroy sunk to his knees in delight as the emotion overwhelmed him, with his Augusta National hoodoo finally at an end.

How Rory McIlroy found strength in his vulnerability to secure greatest moment
10:49 , Jamie BraidwoodOne of the most important moments in Rory McIlroy’s historic victory at the Masters came before he had even hit a shot: at Augusta, he said, he was ready to have his heart broken all over again. After the ride he had been on in pursuit of the green jacket, and career grand slam, McIlroy reckoned he had already been through the worst of what his sport could throw at him, and it wasn’t so bad. “You dust yourself off and you go again,” McIlroy said last Tuesday. “I think that's why I've become a little more comfortable in laying everything out there and being somewhat vulnerable.”
On Sunday, it was McIlroy’s acceptance of his vulnerabilities that became his greatest strength in finally winning at Augusta. He had a five-foot putt to win the Masters, and missed. He faced the same nightmare and, in the moment that mattered, it made him stronger.

Child prodigy to grand slam winner: The making of Masters champion Rory McIlroy
01:12 , Luke BakerFrom the home video of a three-year-old practising in his living room to chipping balls into a washing machine on national television aged nine, it was obvious that Rory McIlroy had the talent to make history.
The extent to which he would do so was the only question, a question now answered emphatically by victory in the Masters to complete the career grand slam.
McIlroy is the first European player to have won all four major titles, joining an elite club populated by greats of the sport Gene Sarazen, Ben Hogan, Gary Player, Jack Nicklaus and Tiger Woods.

Rory McIlroy finally ends decade of pain with most dramatic Masters win to seal grand slam
Monday 14 April 2025 00:57 , Luke BakerRory McIlroy ended his major drought in barely-believable fashion by dramatically beating Justin Rose in a play-off to finally win the Masters and complete the career grand slam.
McIlroy birdied the first extra hole after the pair had finished tied on 11 under par following an extraordinary final round.
On his 11th attempt to join golf’s most exclusive club and 3,900 days after his last major victory in the 2014 US PGA, McIlroy almost threw away a five-shot lead before claiming a coveted green jacket at a pulsating Augusta National.

Rory McIlroy: "I wondered if it would ever be my time"
Monday 14 April 2025 00:45 , Luke BakerHere’s what Rory McIlroy had to say about that remarkable victory.
Speaking in the Butler Cabin, McIlroy said: “It feels incredible. This is my 17th time here and I started to wonder if it would ever be my time.
“The last 10 years coming here with burden of the grand slam on my shoulders, trying to achieve that... I wonder what we’ll talk about going into next year’s Masters!
“I’m honoured, thrilled and so proud to call myself Masters champion.
“When I went into the creek at the 13th, I’m really pleased with how I bounced back. And the double bogey at the 1st as well. I was really nervous at the 1st but it got me into it.
“How I responded to setbacks is what I’ll take from this week - I bounced back when I needed to.
“This was 14 years in making, since going out with four-shot lead in 2011. I could have done it there and there was a lot of pent-up emotion that came out on the 18th green. A moment like that makes all the years and close calls worth it.”
Rory McIlroy to give his thoughts
Monday 14 April 2025 00:36 , Luke BakerMcIlroy will be in the Butler Cabin and give his thoughts on that remarkable victory shortly. What drama.
And spare a thought for Justin Rose, who played so well to force an unlikely play-off but now has two Masters play-off losses on his CV.

Emotional Rory McIlroy wins the Masters
Monday 14 April 2025 00:18 , Luke BakerHands in the air initially, then he drops to the floor in tears. Then back up to hug his caddy Harry Diamond. Unbelievable! Rory McIlroy finally completes the career grand slam - just the sixth man in history!
A long hug with Justin Rose. Great sportsmanship from the Ryder Cup teammate to McIlroy. WOW!
RORY MCILROY WINS THE MASTERS
Monday 14 April 2025 00:16 , Luke BakerYou don’t get many second chances in life. McIlroy has one here. Four feet for birdie to win the Masters. Other side of the hole from the one he missed.
Strikes it AND IT’S THERE! THIS TIME HE’S DONE IT! RORY MCILROY WINS THE MASTERS AND THE CAREER GRAND SLAM
1st play-off hole: McIlroy v Rose
Monday 14 April 2025 00:15 , Luke BakerRose gives it all due care and attention. It’s probably 15 feet, down the hill.
He sets it on its way. Outside the right edge and it stays right! Missed it! McIlroy has a four-foot putt to win the Masters.
1st play-off hole: McIlroy v Rose
Monday 14 April 2025 00:13 , Luke BakerThe crowd are desperate for McIlroy to win this but it will all come down to the putts.
Rose will go first and can pile the pressure on McIlroy. He made a brilliant birdie during regulation. He has to have the mindset of needing to hole it.
1st play-off hole: McIlroy v Rose
Monday 14 April 2025 00:12 , Luke BakerRose to play first. Good position but further back than McIlroy. He’ll take an eight-iron with 157 yards to the hole. Great shot! Bounces just short of the hole and leaps past. That’ll be a nice putt down the hill - real birdie chance.
Wedge for McIlroy. Can’t go in the bunker like he did in regulation play. AND IT’S SUBLIME. Past the hole, spinning back, comes past Rose’s ball and gives him a glorious birdie look from a few feet.
“Rory, Rory, Rory” chant the crowd.
1st play-off hole: McIlroy v Rose
Monday 14 April 2025 00:05 , Luke BakerRemember, Justin Rose has been here before. He was in a play-off in the 2017 Masters against Sergio Garcia.
Garcia came out on top that day but can Rose draw on those experiences?
They’ll play the 18th. Rose will have the honour and he hits his tee shot down the middle. It goes towards the right of the fairway but stays in the short stuff.
McIlroy takes driver. What has he got left? Nice shape to it, left to right and it’s A1 position - what an unreal shot. About three yards away from where he was in regulation play!
Play-off rules
Monday 14 April 2025 00:02 , Luke BakerThe rules of the play-off are simple. It’s sudden death - McIlroy vs Rose, playing the 18th and the 10th alternately until one of them wins. It could all be over in one hole
McIlroy missed a putt to win the Masters, while Rose made a monster birdie on the 18th to get to -11. They will be in completely different mindsets right now.

Rory McIlroy and Justin Rose head to play-off
Sunday 13 April 2025 23:56 , Luke BakerI can’t believe it. I thought he had it. Now, Rory McIlroy has to somehow compose himself after missing that five-footer for the Masters and try to beat Justin Rose in a play-off.
This is nerve-shredding

Rory McIlroy misses the putt
Sunday 13 April 2025 23:53 , Luke BakerFive feet for par. Aiming right half of the cup but inside the hole. Any other situation and this is a make, every time. How does he handle the pressure.
Lines it up. OH NO! HE’S MISSED IT. WIDE LEFT. THAT WAS A PUTT FOR THE CAREER GRAND SLAM AND HE’S MISSED IT
McIlroy bunker shot
Sunday 13 April 2025 23:49 , Luke BakerIt couldn’t happen without severe drama, could it. McIlroy is a great bunker player and he needs to show that here.
Sets his feet, chips it, lands softly, runs down towards the hole and now he’s got five feet for par. A good shot but deary, deary me. How do you fancy this to win the Masters?
Leaderboard: -12: McIlroy; -11: Rose; -9: Reed; -8: Scheffler
McIlroy's second at 18
Sunday 13 April 2025 23:47 , Luke BakerThis is the shot, Rory. Find a good spot on the green and that green jacket will be on your shoulders in a matter of minutes...
He chats with caddy Harry Diamond. Just 125 yards in but oh no! He’s in the greenside bunker.
Needs an up and down in two to win the title now. If he takes three shots, it’s a play-off with Justin Rose. We dare not think about if he somehow takes four.
Leaderboard: -12: McIlroy; -11: Rose; -9: Reed; -8: Scheffler
Reed finishes up
Sunday 13 April 2025 23:44 , Luke BakerPatrick Reed finishes with a par, a final-round 69 and he ends on -9. He’ll finish third behind McIlroy and Rose. What order will they be in, though?
Leaderboard: -12: McIlroy; -11: Rose; -9: Reed; -8: Scheffler
McIlroy finds the fairway
Sunday 13 April 2025 23:41 , Luke BakerJust two more big swings from McIlroy and the title could be his. First of those is the tee shot...
PERFECT! Smashes it down the middle of the 18th fairway. Just one more swing, two putts and the Masters title is yours, Rory.
Easy, right...?
Leaderboard: -12: McIlroy; -11: Rose; -9: Reed; -8: Scheffler
Horror finish for Aberg
Sunday 13 April 2025 23:39 , Luke BakerLudvig Aberg with all sorts of issues at 18. He finds the fairway bunker, then fails to get out with his next shot, hitting the lip.
From there, he finds a greenside bunker, then chips over the back of the green before racing one well past the flag on the way back. It all adds up to a triple-bogey seven. He drops from -9 to -6 - incredible to think he had the co-lead about 15 minutes ago.
Instead of finishing third, he’ll likely be sixth now...
Leaderboard: -12: McIlroy; -11: Rose; -9: Reed; -8: Scheffler
McIlroy takes the lead to the 18th
Sunday 13 April 2025 23:35 , Luke BakerMcIlroy will rightly take his time over this birdie putt. Check all the angles, line it up. AND IT’S THERE! Stroked in and Rory McIlroy leads the Masters by one shot heading up 18.
He’s a par away from history. The career grand slam is within reach...

Patrick Reed holes out for eagle
Sunday 13 April 2025 23:32 , Luke BakerWhat a moment for Patrick Reed! Good tee shot down the middle of the fairway at 17 and, from 146 yards, his iron shot bounces once and lands in the bottom of the cup!
It’s an eagle for Reed and he jumps to -9. He looks baffled back on the fairway until it’s confirmed it’s gone in.

McIlroy's sparkling second at 17
Sunday 13 April 2025 23:28 , Luke BakerMcIlroy has 184 yards to the green at 17 - great angle in, no wind. Can he attack this with an eight-iron and set up a birdie chance?
YES HE CAN! McIlroy is screaming for it to “go, go, go” in the air and it obliges. Lands on the front of the green, hops forward and runs to about three feet from the hole. Should be a kick-in birdie and a lead up the last? Deary me, the drama!
Leaderboard: -11: McIlroy, Rose; -9: Aberg; -8: Scheffler, DeChambeau
McIlroy on 17 as Scheffler finishes up
Sunday 13 April 2025 23:24 , Luke BakerThe 17th is a tough, tough golf hole. Of the final two, McIlroy probably has a better chance of birdie at 18.
He produces a good tee shot, up the right, in the first cut but it’s a long way back from the green. A good iron will be required.
Scottie Scheffler - defending champion and world No 1 - finishes up with a par for a 69 and -8 for the tournament. That’ll be a top five for him.
Leaderboard: -11: McIlroy, Rose; -9: Aberg; -8: Scheffler, DeChambeau

Aberg drops out as McIlroy only pars
Sunday 13 April 2025 23:19 , Luke BakerRight, this is all setting up now. Aberg has missed his par putt back up the hill to drop to -9. Unless he holes his second shot at 18, he can’t win.
McIlroy’s birdie putt at 16 juuuuust misses, so he stays level with Rose at -11.
Two holes to go for McIlroy. Drop a shot and Rose wins. Par-par and it’s a play-off. If he can find a birdie, then glory awaits. Hoo boy - how are your nerves?
Leaderboard: -11: McIlroy, Rose; -9: Aberg; -8: Scheffler, DeChambeau
Rose finishes with a birdie to set clubhouse target
Sunday 13 April 2025 23:17 , Luke BakerWow, wow, wow. Justin Rose has done all he can now! He digs out one final birdie putt for a sparkling round of 66 - 10 birdies in there.
It moves him to -11, back level with McIlroy and that is a serious clubhouse target. Over to you, Rory!
Leaderboard: -11: McIlroy, Rose; -10: Aberg; -8: Scheffler

McIlroy sets up birdie look at 16
Sunday 13 April 2025 23:14 , Luke BakerThis tee shot at the par-three 16th will look scary for McIlroy but he makes a good fist of it.
In fact, better than that - it’s a lovely iron shot towards the pin at the back right. The ball grips and curves round to set up a decent birdie look
Leaderboard: -11: McIlroy; -10: Rose, Aberg; -8: Scheffler
Aberg too bold with putt
Sunday 13 April 2025 23:13 , Luke BakerOh dear, Ludvig Aberg. He has no margin for error but gets too aggressive with a birdie putt on 17. Races it at the hole and it ends up 10 feet by. That’s a stinker of a return putt for par. Miss it and his title chances are probably over.
Meanwhile, Rose finds the 18th green with his second shot and gets a huge ovation as he walks up. Lovely from the crowd.
Leaderboard: -11: McIlroy; -10: Rose, Aberg; -8: Scheffler
McIlroy misses eagle putt but retakes solo lead
Sunday 13 April 2025 23:10 , Luke BakerWell, that’s a slight dampener on things. Not a great putt from McIlroy as his eagle attempt slides by. Tap-in birdie but that second shot deserved the eagle.
Still, it puts him back one shot ahead. He’d rather have two but it’s better than nothing.
Leaderboard: -11: McIlroy; -10: Rose, Aberg; -8: Scheffler
WATCH: McIlroy's shot of a lifetime
Sunday 13 April 2025 23:08 , Luke BakerIf Rory McIlroy goes on to win the Masters, then that will likely be the shot that did it. Simply remarkable. The shot of a lifetime.

McIlroy produces incredible shot to set up eagle chance
Sunday 13 April 2025 23:06 , Luke BakerOH MY WORD! INCREDIBLE FROM RORY MCILROY.
Somehow, someway, he puts all the horror shows behind him and comes up with one of the shots of his life on the 15th!
His tee shot at 15 has left him blocked out to the green by the trees but he decides to take it on, hook the ball round them, fly it over the water and land on the green. It’s spectacular and starts rolling towards the hole, eventually coming to rest six feet away for an eagle chance.
The cojones to take that on, given everything that has happened, and the skill to pull it off is unreal. Chants of “Rory, Rory, Rory” from the crowd. Just wow!
Leaderboard: -10: McIlroy, Rose, Aberg; -8: Scheffler
WATCH: Rory McIlroy finds the water
Sunday 13 April 2025 23:02 , Luke BakerGreat tee shot from Rose at 18, down the middle of the fairway. Can he somehow fashion a birdie to get in the clubhouse at -11? That would be a serious target.
Here’s the moment Rory McIlroy found the water and his round turned, by the way.

Aberg can't make birdie
Sunday 13 April 2025 22:59 , Luke BakerSuddenly Aberg is tied for the lead and he’ll fancy this. He has a birdie putt from the fringe on 16 - it’s a horror, turning sharply and does well to get it within a couple of feet. He safely taps in for par. Can he find a birdie in the final two holes?
McIlroy has the most chances left for birdies but how is he feeling right now? His tee shot at the par-five 15th is in play but more left than he’d like. He may not have a line into the green.
Leaderboard: -10: McIlroy, Rose, Aberg; -8: Scheffler
McIlroy and Rose drop shots
Sunday 13 April 2025 22:56 , Luke BakerMcIlroy and Rose now battling to save par. Rory’s par putt is right on the right edge of the hole but doesn’t drop! It’s a bogey and he’s no longer in the lead.
A good chip over the bunker from Rose at 17 but he’s still got a tester for par from eight feet... This is to stay in the solo lead of the Masters as he heads to 18.
But he misses it! It stays left of the hole and it’s a three-way tie at the top between McIlroy, Rose and Aberg!
Leaderboard: -10: McIlroy, Rose, Aberg; -8: Scheffler
Aberg closes to within one
Sunday 13 April 2025 22:50 , Luke BakerHello Ludvig Aberg. He’s barely made a putt all day but when faced with an eight-footer for birdie on the 15th, he delivers!
Into double digits at -10. Only one shot back and both McIlroy and Rose - who went over the back of the green at 17 - are scrambling for par on -11...
Leaderboard: -11: McIlroy, Rose; -9: Aberg; -8: Scheffler
McIlroy and Rose battling tee shots
Sunday 13 April 2025 22:48 , Luke BakerI guess it was never going to be easy for McIlroy but this has spiralled out of nowhere and suddenly he’s in a real battle with Rose.
Rose’s tee shot at 17 is slightly left, he won’t have a perfect angle into the green. But he’s in better shape than McIlroy at the 14th - he goes right with his tee shot and is in the pine straw.
He has to draw his second shot and does well to get it towards the green, just off the front in a little bowl. Not an easy up and down for par.
Leaderboard: -11: McIlroy, Rose; -9: Aberg; -8: Scheffler
Rose and McIlroy tied at the top after huge swing
Sunday 13 April 2025 22:40 , Luke BakerWhat a huge putt for McIlroy here. He’s left himself eight feet for bogey. He could really do with this...
BUT NO! Stays right of the hole and somehow he’s made a seven at the par-five. A fourth double bogey of the week! He drops back to -11 and Rose’s birdie putt at 16 is now for a tie for the lead.
And Rose makes it! Out of nowhere, we have a tie at the top!
Leaderboard: -11: McIlroy, Rose; -9: Aberg; -8: Scheffler

McIlroy in the water
Sunday 13 April 2025 22:35 , Luke BakerRory McIlroy what have you done?! He’s cruising along and lays up at the par-five 13th with his second shot.
A wedge in and should have a great birdie look but blocks his shot to the white, it barely bounces on the green and rolls back off it, into the creek! How has he done that?
Suddenly he needs an up-and-down to save bogey, while Rose is putting for birdie up ahead. This could be a huge swing...
Leaderboard: -13: McIlroy; -10: Rose; -9: Aberg; -8: Scheffler
Here comes Justin Rose
Sunday 13 April 2025 22:33 , Luke BakerHow strongly can Rose finish? Can he put pressure on McIlroy?
Oh yes he can! Stunning tee shot at the 16th as he lofts an iron towards the flag and it’s within six feet for a glorious birdie chance. If he holes it, he’ll be within two of McIlroy...
Aberg nearly holes a birdie effort from off the green on 14 as it lips out. Solid par though when bogey was on the table.
Leaderboard: -13: McIlroy; -10: Rose; -9: Aberg; -8: Scheffler
Another hole ticked off for Rory McIlroy. Two putts on the 12th green, in for par and that’s another obstacle negotiated. Six holes to go...
Behind him, there’s some movement. Rose gets the shot back he dropped at the 14th on the par-five 15th. A hard-fought birdie from the bunker.
And Aberg also responds to a bogey with a birdie at the par-five 13th. For goo measure, Scottie Scheffler moves to -8 with back-to-back birdies at 13 and 14.
Things have now completely unravelled for Bryson DeChambeau, who can’t get up and down from the bunker and bogeys the 12th to drop way back to -6.
Leaderboard: -13: McIlroy; -10: Rose; -9: Aberg; -8: Scheffler
McIlroy on the dreaded 12th
Sunday 13 April 2025 22:17 , Luke BakerOn to the 12th hole. McIlroy’s dreams have died at this par three in the past. He had a horror show here during his Sunday collapse in 2011.
With a four-shot lead, all he needs to do is find the green. Take the water out of play...
He does that. It’s away from the pin, towards the back of the green but it’s dry and he’ll be putting. Two-putt for par, get out of dodge and head to the par five will be the plan.
Leaderboard: -13: McIlroy; -9: Rose; -8: Aberg, Reed
McIlroy makes bogey and DeChambeau a double
Sunday 13 April 2025 22:14 , Luke BakerIt won’t all be plain sailing for McIlroy, who can’t get up and down after the ball came short of the water. His par putt drifts by but a bogey five at the 11th isn’t the end of the world.
DeChambeau is in all sorts of trouble though. Completely misreads his bogey putt on the 11th, it’s the wrong line and he double bogeys. He falls all the way back to -7 and out of contention
Leaderboard: -13: McIlroy; -9: Rose; -8: Aberg, Reed
McIlroy flirts with the water and DeChambeau gets wet
Sunday 13 April 2025 22:08 , Luke BakerWow - Amen Corner baring its teeth.
McIlroy flirting with danger. He has to thread the ball between two trees at the 11th, he tries to hook it round towards the green but it’s going too far left. It’s bounding towards the water but pulls up one or two rolls short of going down the hill and in the drink. It won’t be a fun shot from there with a dodgy stance but at least it’s not wet.
The same can’t be said of DeChambeau... He’s in prime position on the fairway but blocks his iron shot to the left and it lands in the water! That’s his Masters chances gone, you’d think.
Leaderboard: -14: McIlroy; -10: Rose; -9: DeChambeau; -8: Aberg, Reed

McIlroy finds another birdie
Sunday 13 April 2025 21:57 , Luke BakerRory McIlroy is turning the screw now! From the fairway at 10, he nails an iron into the heart of the green, seven feet from the flag. And the birdie lands - he’s back to four clear at -14.
DecHambeau can only par and he’s now five strokes behind.
Leaderboard: -14: McIlroy; -10: Rose; -9: DeChambeau, Aberg; -8: Conners, Reed
Rose agonisingly misses eagle
Sunday 13 April 2025 21:55 , Luke BakerJustin Rose is feeling this now. He is millimetres away from an eagle at the par-five 13th as his put shaves the left edge of the hole. Rose is down on the floor with a wry grin on his face.
It’s still a third straight birdie though and he’s now second on his own at -10.
Meanwhile, Aberg is in all sorts of trouble on the 11th, in trees, chipping out but nails a 15-foot putt for a par save. Stays at -9, that’s huge.
Leaderboard: -13: McIlroy; -10: Rose; -9: DeChambeau, Aberg; -8: Conners, Reed
McIlroy and DeChambeau head to the back nine
Sunday 13 April 2025 21:48 , Luke BakerOn to the back nine for the final pair. Just nine holes to go for Rory McIlroy in pursuit of his Masters dream. But as we know, things can change in a moment on the Augusta back nine.
Good start for him as he crushes a drive down the 10th fairway. And DeChambeau follows him
Leaderboard: -13: McIlroy; -9: DeChambeau, Aberg, Rose; -8: Conners, Reed

McIlroy finds a birdie at the 9th
Sunday 13 April 2025 21:41 , Luke BakerThat’s how you respond to growing pressure from behind! McIlroy produces a superb second shot at the 9th and then calmly rolls in the birdie putt from eight feet. He’s up to -13 and has a four-shot lead.
DeChambeau should join him in a birdie with a shorter putt but the line is slightly wrong, it stays high and he can’t match his playing partner.
Leaderboard: -13: McIlroy; -9: DeChambeau, Aberg, Rose; -8: Conners, Reed
Par-five struggles for big two
Sunday 13 April 2025 21:26 , Luke BakerSand again for McIlroy at the par-five 8th as he finds another fairway bunker and can’t reach the green in two. He lays up and then fires in a wedge with his third, which gives him 25 feet or so for birdie.
DeChambeau also lays up but his third is more errant and he’ll have 40-odd feet for birdie. You’d expect these two to be birdie merchants on par fives but not the case so far today.
Corey Conners finds a birdie at the 8th shortly before to join Aberg at -8, while Jason Day and Patrick Reed have joined Scheffler and Rose at -7, five shots back.
Leaderboard: -12: McIlroy; -9: DeChambeau; -8: Aberg, Conners; -7: Rose, Scheffler, Day, Reed
McIlroy stays on top
Sunday 13 April 2025 21:09 , Luke BakerGorgeous shot by DeChambeau from the sand at the 7th. A clever shot, uses the slope and the ball arcs round, stopping a few feet from the hole. Taps in for par and it’s a top sand-save.
After his tree magic, Rory’s birdie putt is a trickler down the hill. How has he left that short?! I didn’t think that was possible... Still, he’ll take a par after where he was following the tee shot. Another hole ticked off and the three-shot lead remains.
Leaderboard: -12: McIlroy; -9: DeChambeau; -8: Aberg; -7: Rose, Scheffler, Conners

McIlroy sets up birdie chance with glorious shot
Sunday 13 April 2025 21:06 , Luke BakerPeals of laughter from Rory McIlroy as he comes up with a ludicrous shot! His tee shot at the 7th is off-line, into the trees but he comes up with a gem.
Finds a tiny back between the tree line and the ball flies perfectly before dropping beyond the flag. Suddenly he’s got a brilliant shot at birdie out of nowhere - he’s right to laugh. How did he find that gap?
Leaderboard: -12: McIlroy; -9: DeChambeau; -8: Aberg; -7: Rose, Scheffler, Conners
Rose nearly produces magic moment
Sunday 13 April 2025 20:51 , Luke BakerJustin Rose is not a million miles away from an albatross! His second shot at the par-five 8th bounds on the green and so nearly hits the flag, bouncing past the hole instead. It’s a good way past but a nice two putt secures the birdie and he jumps into fourth on his own at -7.
Aberg looks like he’s about to get to -9 and move alongside Dechambeau bu his birdie putt at the 7th lips out. He thought it was in!
Leaderboard: -12: McIlroy; -9: DeChambeau; -8: Aberg; -7: Rose; -6: Scheffler, Day, Conners
Par-par on the 5th
Sunday 13 April 2025 20:47 , Luke BakerDeChambeau is struggling on the greens here. His birdie attempt at 5 races by the hole and leaves himself a tricky one coming back. Clumsy. Avoids a third straight three-putt by slotting it in though.
McIlroy’s chip from the fringe is decent, to about eight feet or so. Holds his nerve and rolls it in. After all that par-par and nothing changes.
Leaderboard: -12: McIlroy; -9: DeChambeau; -8: Aberg; -7: Rose; -6: Scheffler, Day, Conners
McIlroy in recovery mode on the 5th
Sunday 13 April 2025 20:41 , Luke BakerMcIlroy in tree trouble at the 5th as he screams “FORE RIGHT” off the tee. He’s chipping out of the pine straw, round a tree. 170-odd yards to the pin and he lashes it. Decent contact and it’s in the fringe, next to the greenside bunker.
Good recovery and he might be able to salvage par with an up-and-down, which looked unlikely after his first shot.
DeChambeau finds the fairway from the tee, a nine-iron is nicely struck and he’ll have a good look at birdie.
In other news, Scheffler makes another birdie and climbs to -6...
Leaderboard: -12: McIlroy; -9: DeChambeau; -8: Aberg; -6: Scheffler, Day, Conners, Rose
Huge swing to McIlroy on the 4th
Sunday 13 April 2025 20:30 , Luke BakerStruggles for Bryson at the 4th. Putting from off the green, absolutely miles away, it’s way too high and goes well past the hole. The slope brings it back a bit but he’s still got 12 feet for the par... Down the hill, always left and it’s back-to-back bogeys for DeChambeau.
Suddenly, McIlroy’s two-shot lead that he began the round with is restored. He tries to make it three with a birdie putt on the 4th and rolls it in! Rory makes back-to-back birdies and leads by three. WOW!
Leaderboard: -12: McIlroy; -9: DeChambeau; -7: Aberg; -6: Day, Conners
McIlroy birdies as DeChambeau bogeys
Sunday 13 April 2025 20:18 , Luke BakerAfter an ok second shot, Bryson left with a very quick putt down the hill on the 3rd green. Ooh, that’s aggressive... Misses low and has left himself with work to do for the par.
Meanwhile, McIlroy with a nice pitch and a birdie look from inside 10 feet. It swings left to right and he makes it! Huge from Rory. Climbs back to -11.
All the more pressure on DeChambeau’s seven-foot par putt... Takes a long time on the read and then misses it. Drops a shot and McIlroy is back in the lead. What a swing.
Scottie Scheffler finds a birdie on the 5th to move to -5. He’s too far back, right? Right...?
Leaderboard: -11: McIlroy; -10: DeChambeau; -7: Aberg, Conners
Dechambeau takes the lead
Sunday 13 April 2025 20:04 , Luke BakerMcIlroy’s struggles may be the headline but DeChambeau isn’t exactly playing great golf either right now. He gives his 60-foot putt for eagle far too much respect. It looks like it’s stopping 20 feet short but rolls on a bit further - thought it’s still the best part of 10 feet for birdie.
Good two putt from McIlroy to at least par the hole but Bryson has this birdie putt for the solo lead... It’s a quick one down the hill, he barely nudges it and makes it! That was a gutsy putt
Tell you what though, the likes of Aberg and Conners at four shots back might just start fancying this...
Leaderboard: -11: DeChambeau; -10: McIlroy; -7: Aberg, Conners -6: Rose
