Justin Rose rolled back the years at the Masters to storm into a first-round lead but Rory McIlroy’s pursuit of the Englishman unravelled in extraordinary fashion with four dropped shots on his final four holes to finish seven off the pace.
Rose, who came close to winning the green jacket in 2015 and 2017, carded a remarkable first-round score of 65 to mark his 20th appearance at Augusta National, leaving the 44-year-old three clear at the top of the leaderboard. Rose made eight birdies, with a dropped shot at the 18th his only bogey of the day.
Earlier, Scottie Scheffler, the defending champion, made an ominous start with a calm and controlled bogey-free round of -4. But McIlroy, looking to complete a career grand slam, continued his excellent pre-tournament form as he caught the World No 1, joining him on -4 in a share of second place with four holes to play.
However, McIlroy’s hopes of gaining further ground on Rose were thwarted when he found the water on the par-5 15th, with his chip across the green running over and down into Rae’s Creek. It was followed by another double-bogey on the 17th as McIlroy somehow finished on even-par, and a tie for 26th.

Justin Rose leads as Rory McIlroy suffers nightmare finish at Masters
00:28 , Jamie BraidwoodTwo-time runner-up Justin Rose equalled his lowest round at Augusta National as Rory McIlroy suffered a nightmare finish on day one of the 89th Masters.
McIlroy ran up double bogeys on the 15th and 17th as he stumbled to a potentially ruinous 72 in his 11th attempt to claim a green jacket and complete the career grand slam.
In stark contrast, Rose had the course record of 63 in his sights after picking up his eighth birdie of the day on the 16th, but had to scramble for par on the next and bogeyed the last to card an opening seven-under-par 65.

The Masters tee times: Round 2 schedule and start time
00:21 , Jamie BraidwoodRory McIlroy will have to shake-off a poor finish to his opening round of the Masters as he looks to chase Justin Rose and Scottie Scheffler at Augusta National.
McIlroy was bogey-free and four-under-par heading into the 15th hole on Thursday, but made a costly double-bogey seven and then dropped further shots at the 17th to finish at even-par.
McIlroy had been in a share of second place with defending champion Scheffler, who made an ominous start, while Rose shot to the top of the leaderboard with an excellent opening round of seven-under.
After thunderstorms to start the week, the weather has brightened up in Augusta, though there is a chance of a few showers on Friday afternoon - here are the tee times for the second round and the race to make the cut:

Rory McIlroy falls away at Masters
00:00 , Jamie BraidwoodRory McIlroy was bogey-free and -4 as he crossed Rae’s Creek on the 15th, looking to nudge his chip close to the pin and set up a birdie chance in his pursuit of Justin Rose.
What followed was extraordinary. McIlroy was faced with a tough chip up the hill on 15th and down the slope towards the hole, and it trickled into the water.
But his double-bogey was followed by another at the 17th, leaving McIlroy seven shots off the pace after being within touching distance of the leader.
There’s still plenty of time, but it’s extraordinary that Ludvig Aberg (-4 on the back nine) ended up with the best score in McIlroy’s group. Even Akshay Bhatia (-2) finished with a lower score than McIlroy.
Leaderboard: (-7) Justin Rose (-4) Ludvig Aberg, Scottie Scheffler, Corey Conners (-3) Bryson DeChambeau, Tyrrell Hatton

Rory McIlroy at 18
23:47 , Jamie BraidwoodIncredibly, from -4 with four holes to play, Rory McIlroy is level-par walking up the 18th.
His drive goes right and lands on the edge pine straw, requiring a hack to get to the front of the green.
McIlroy bumps it towards the hole... teasing the chip-in birdie... but it stops short. He taps in for a closing par and round of 72.
Where to begin summing that up, then?

Bryson DeChambeau's hot streak rolls on
23:29 , Jamie BraidwoodBIRDIE-PAR-BIRDIE-BIRDIE for Bryson DeChambeau. One of the most popular players at the Masters makes his move up the leaderboard late on day one thanks to a sensational approach on the par-3 16.
He joins Scheffler on -4 with two to play.
Leaderboard: (-7) Justin Rose (-4) Scottie Scheffler, Corey Conners (-3) Bryson De Chambeau, Ludvig Aberg, Tyrrell Hatton
Rory McIlroy at 17
23:27 , Jamie BraidwoodAh no... another fairway made for McIlroy but another approach landing long of the green. On 17, his approach tumbles down the back of the green and down the slope, which is not nice at all.
Going to be a challenge to get up and down from there. And so it proves: McIlroy was left with a horrible downhill putt for par, which trickles a few feet past the hole.
Oh my goodness... the bogey putt slips past too. McIlroy makes his second double-bogey in three holes. Four shots gone in a blink of an eye.
Bryson DeChambeau at -3
23:24 , Jamie BraidwoodBryson DeChambeau’s score has been bouncing around all day, barely making a par, but has got to -3 for the first time. He has taken full advantage of the par-5s with birdies at 13 and 15 and moves into a share of third place.
Rory McIlroy at the 16th
23:11 , Jamie BraidwoodMcIlroy will look to shrug off that disappointment of the double-bogey at the par-3 16th. But he turns back to his caddie in exasperation after his tee shot lands about 10 feet short of the line he wanted.
McIlroy is left with 25 feet for birdie. It’s close, but was never tracking. Two holes left and he would love to get at least one shot back.
Leaderboard: (-7) Justin Rose (-4) Scottie Scheffler, Corey Conners (-3) Ludvig Aberg, Tyrrell Hatton (-2) Rory McIlroy
Rory McIlroy at the 15th
22:59 , Jamie BraidwoodMcIlroy’s drive finds the middle of the fairway but his approach over Rae’s Creek to the par-5 15th goes long. Fortunately, it stops on the slope before falling too far away, but it does leave a tricky chip but up the hill to the downward green....
NOOOOOO MCILROY FINDS THE WATER WITH HIS CHIP! TOO HARD AND IT ROLLS ALL THE WAY DOWN!
McIlroy takes a drop. This will be his fifth shot. He bounces it onto the firm green but there’s still work to do from there... he would do well to avoid a double-bogey.
He cannot avoid the seven. Such a sudden and potentially damaging blow for McIlroy, who was looking so assured and solid until that chip on 15.
Meanwhile, Ludvig Aberg has made the most of the par-5s and three birdies in a row shoots him above McIlroy to -3.
Leaderboard: (-7) Justin Rose (-4) Scottie Scheffler, Corey Conners (-3) Ludvig Aberg, Tyrrell Hatton (-2) McIlroy
JUSTIN ROSE SETS MASTERS CLUBHOUSE LEAD
22:41 , Jamie BraidwoodA first bogey of the day from Justin Rose cames at the 18th.
But it should not detract from a stunning opening round from the 44-year-old Englishman. Where did this come from? He is the Masters leader at -7.
His putter was on fire today and it was just the driver that let him down on the final few holes of the round.
But Rose, who finished runner-up at the Masters in 2015 and 2017, had played 72 rounds at Augusta before today. He had never shot 65 until now.
Leaderboard: (-7) Justin Rose (-4) Rory McIlroy, Scottie Scheffler, Corey Conners (-3) Tyrrell Hatton

Justin Rose at the 18th
22:34 , Jamie BraidwoodIs this the hole where Justin Rose’s mistakes from the tee catch up with him? The Masters leader lets another drive go right, and on 18 that is bad news. He ends up behind a tree and has to hack out to his left onto the fairway.
He’s left with a long par putt to card a 64.
Rory McIlroy at the 14th
22:32 , Jamie BraidwoodMcIlroy dials in another beauty of a wedge approach on the 14th, tucking it to six feet.
But shock! It dribbles past the edge of the hole! McIlroy was looking for the break but it didn’t turn.
Leaderboard: (-8) Justin Rose (-4) Rory McIlroy, Scottie Scheffler, Corey Conners (-3) Tyrrell Hatton
Justin Rose four clear with one to play
22:23 , Jamie BraidwoodJustin Rose landed in some trouble on 17 as he pushed his drive right and into the pine straw. But he catches a break and is able to punch his way out.
And, from there, Rose’s short-game is immaculate. He gets up-and-down from the fringe of the green after leaving himself a couple of feet for par.
He stays bogey-free and four shots clear. A birdie on 18 and he’ll tie the course record.
Rory McIlroy at the 13th
22:10 , Jamie BraidwoodMcIlroy’s driving has been so good today. He powers another down the right side of the fairway, opening the angle to reach the par-5 13th in two.
Which he does. Gorgeous approach from McIlroy over the creek and landing, with 20ft left down the hill for an eagle-three.
It was a really tricky downhill putt for McIlroy, with the green also sloping from right to left. He trickles it down the hill and leaves two feet for birdie.
In it goes. Birdie #4 of the day for McIlroy and still another par-5 to come...
Leaderboard: (-8) Justin Rose (-4) Rory McIlroy, Scottie Scheffler, Corey Conners (-3) Tyrrell Hatton
ANOTHER FOR JUSTIN ROSE!
22:01 , Jamie BraidwoodYOU CANNOT BE SERIOUS! Another supreme putt from Justin Rose, this time on the par-3 16th, and it gives him a four-shot lead on the opening day of the Masters!
Rose’s putter has been red-hot today. He found a safe landing spot on the 16th green and rolled in another stunner. With two holes to go, he’s on course for a 64...
The course record is 63...

Rory McIlroy at the 12th
21:50 , Jamie BraidwoodAnother test passed from McIlroy in the opening round. He finds a safe part of the green on the par-3, the shortest hole on the course, and two-putts his way across the green to stay on -3.
Two of McIlroy’s next three holes are the par-5s. Buckle in.
McIlroy score: -3 (thru 12)
JUSTIN ROSE EXTENDS MASTERS LEAD
21:48 , Jamie BraidwoodJustin Rose has been a bit wayward on these par-5s on the back nine, but his short game has been excellent and it again sets up a birdie chance at 15.
And Justin Rose, at 44, moves into a three-shot lead at the Masters! SEVEN-UNDER for Rose, with no bogies on his card with three holes to play.
Sensational stuff.
Leaderboard: (-7) Justin Rose (-4) Scottie Scheffler, Corey Conners (-3) Tyrrell Hatton, Rory McIlroy (-2) Aaron Rai
Rory McIlroy at the 11th
21:36 , Jamie BraidwoodMcIlroy has found the water at 11 in the past... with the approach to the green down the hill with the pond to the left one of the scariest shots in golf.
But McIlroy finds the green in two and has a look for birdie. It’s not too far away but rolls half a foot short. A good par through for McIlroy to keep up his momentum.
McIlroy score: -3 (thru 11)
Masters amateur admits to peeing into Rae’s Creek: ‘I forgot we had restrooms’
21:31 , Jamie BraidwoodA hilarious story developing at the Masters, where Spanish amateur Jose Luis Ballester admitted to urinating into Rae’s Creek during his opening round.
“I completely forgot that we had those restrooms to the left of the tee box,” he said. “And then I’m like, I really need to pee.”

Masters amateur admits to peeing into Rae’s Creek: ‘I forgot we had restrooms’
Rory McIlroy at the 10th
21:14 , Jamie BraidwoodSO GOOD. McIlroy made an error with his approach into the par-4 10th, finding the bunker from the middle of the fairway.
But the bunker shot is as good as you’re going to see, lifting it out of the sand and rolling the ball down the fringe and inside a foot of the hole.
McIlroy makes par.
McIlroy score: -3 (thru 10)
Shane Lowry on the move
21:11 , Jamie BraidwoodBack-to-back birdies for the in-form Shane Lowry, who moves to join the ever-expanding group of players on -2.
Among them, once again, is DeChambeau, who makes his fourth birdie of his front nine, to go along with two bogeys. It’s been up-and-down from him so far.
Leaderboard: (-6) Justin Rose (-4) Scottie Scheffler, Corey Conners (-3) Tyrrell Hatton, Rory McIlroy (-2) Aaron Rai, Matt Fitzpatrick, Shane Lowry
Justin Rose marches on
21:09 , Jamie BraidwoodThis is a wonderful, carefree round of golf from Justin Rose. who probably feels he should have a green jacket after two runners-up finishes but is back trying again at the age of 44.
His drive on 13 goes right but he takes the safe decision to play short on the par-5, before guiding his chip to five feet. A good chance of birdie, but the putt slips by! He stays on -6.
Rory McIlroy at the ninth
20:54 , Jamie BraidwoodOoooh is McIlroy heating up out there?! A picture perfect drive left 100 yards to the pin and McIlroy twirls his wedge as he nestles it to inside five feet.
And in it goes! McIlroy reaches the turn at -3, with no bogeys on his card. That’s exactly where Scottie Scheffler was. We are heating up indeed.
McIlroy score: -3 (thru 9)
Tyrrell Hatton into the clubhouse on -3
20:53 , Jamie BraidwoodAn excellent opening round from Tyrrell Hatton, who was controlled and composed in carding a 69, with only the one late bogey at the 17th.
It’s been a great day for Englishmen overall, with Justin Rose leading the way and Aaron Rai in at -2. Matt Fitzpatrick, a major champion who has struggled for form of late, is also -2 through the front nine.
Leaderboard: (-6) Justin Rose (-4) Scottie Scheffler, Corey Conners (-3) Tyrrell Hatton (-2) Rory McIlroy, Aaron Rai, Matt Fitzpatrick
Scottie Scheffler at the 18th
20:40 , Jamie BraidwoodScottie Scheffler, stop that. The defending champion found one of the left-sided bunkers on 18, only to land a stunning approach back up the hill to eight feet.
A closing birdie! No! He hasn’t put a foot wrong today but that maybe was a missed chance. Still, an opening 68, and Scheffler is in a great position. Bogey-free too.
Tyrrell Hatton drops his first shot of the day at 17. He has looked so composed but throws a look of disgust at the hole at that birdie.
Leaderboard: (-6) Justin Rose (-4) Scottie Scheffler, Corey Conners (-3) Tyrrell Hatton (-2) Rory McIlroy, Aaron Rai, Jason Day
Rory McIlroy at the eighth
20:26 , Jamie BraidwoodThere have been many birdies at the par-5 eighth today, which plays at 570 yards. McIlroy clears the furthest bunker on the right side of the fairway, opening the angle to the green. In fact, it’s the longest drive of the day on this hole, at a massive 343 yards.
Oh and McIlroy gets the bounce off the side of the green, rolling the ball towards the hole! Huge break - that leaves about 20 ft for eagle, so surely a birdie to come at least.
Alas, the eagle putt stops short but McIlroy knocks it down for his second birdie of the day. Moving along very nicely.
McIlroy score: -2 (thru 8)

Frustrating finish for Collin Morikawa
20:19 , Jamie BraidwoodLast year’s runner-up held a share of the lead after making an eagle at the 13th... but then fell away. A birdie on the 18th leaves Morikawa with an even-par 72 that could and should have been a lot more.
Meanwhile, Scheffler ended up in the greenside bunker on 17 but produced a wonderful recovery shot to eight feet to save par. Just one more hole for Scheffler, who is on track for a bogey-free round.
And as soon as I mentioned Bryson DeChambeau’s name, the American drops another shot after putting his drive into the trees.
Leaderboard: (-6) Justin Rose (-4) Scottie Scheffler, Corey Conners, Tyrrell Hatton (-2) Bryson DeChambeau, Aaron Rai, Jason Day
Watch out for Bryson DeChambeau
20:14 , Jamie BraidwoodBryson DeChambeau gets his third bridie of the day, although he dropped a shot at the fifth, to join the chasing pack on -2. His finish of sixth last year was his best result at Augusta - after carding an opening 65 on the first day.
Leaderboard: (-6) Justin Rose (-4) Scottie Scheffler, Corey Conners, Tyrrell Hatton (-2) Bryson DeChambeau, Aaron Rai, Jason Day

Justin Rose on fire!
20:09 , Jamie BraidwoodA THIRD birdie in a row for Justin Rose! The 44-year-old is on a roll and his putting has been immaculate so far. This time, on 10, he finds the cup from 11 feet following another wonderful approach. He stretches his lead to two shots!
Leaderboard: (-6) Justin Rose (-4) Scottie Scheffler, Corey Conners, Tyrrell Hatton (-2) Aaron Rai, Jason Day
Rory McIlroy at the seventh
20:07 , Jamie BraidwoodAnother groan from McIlroy as he leaves his approach at the seventh a touch short of the green, but away from the bunker. The driving has been excellent from McIlroy but he’s yet to take advantage of some of these positions.
BIRDIE for Scheffler
20:04 , Jamie BraidwoodOn he goes! Another birdie for Scheffler, this time at the par-3 16th. And it’s another HUGE birdie putt from the defending champion! His approach over the water was safe, the putt from 40+ feet was special.
Into a share of second place.
Leaderboard: (-5) Justin Rose (-4) Scottie Scheffler, Corey Conners, Tyrrell Hatton (-2) Aaron Rai, Jason Day
Scottie Scheffler with three holes to go
19:59 , Jamie BraidwoodScheffler went through the green on 15, much like Collin Morikawa did on his way to a bogey-six, but the defending champion makes a fine up-and-down to save par.
He enters the final stretch of his round, still yet to drop a shot.
Leaderboard: (-5) Justin Rose (-4) Corey Conners, Tyrrell Hatton (-3) Scottie Scheffler (-2) Aaron Rai, Jason Day
Rory McIlroy at the sixth
19:53 , Jamie BraidwoodMcIlroy at the par-3 sixth... it’s a lovely approach, finding the back of the green where he is pin high and 18 feet away...
Down the hill it goes... but slides away to the right. He’ll settle for par.
McIlroy score: -1 (thru 6)

Justin Rose takes the lead at the turn
19:50 , Jamie BraidwoodJUSTIN ROSE! What a front nine from the Englishman, and he makes his fifth birdie of the round to get to -5. He adds another stunner of an approach at the nine, putting his iron to five feet and knocking in the birdie. The runner-up in 2015 and 2017 leads the Masters on his 20th appearance at Augusta. Dreamy stuff.
Leaderboard: (-5) Justin Rose (-4) Corey Conners, Tyrrell Hatton (-3) Scottie Scheffler (-2) Aaron Rai, Jason Day
Aaron Rai finishes on -2
19:47 , Jamie BraidwoodA fine opening round from Aaron Rai, who held the early lead at the Masters after reaching the turn at -4. He had a tough stretch through Amen Corner, with three bogeys in a row, but he responded to get back to -2 for an opening 70.

Rory McIlroy at the fifth
19:40 , Jamie BraidwoodAnother superb drive from McIlroy at the par-four fifth put him in great position, but the approach landed short of the green and left a long putt back uphill.
McIlroy left it seven feet short, though, bending his knees in frustration. He gets the save at least.
McIlroy score: -1 (thur 5)
Corey Conners takes clubhouse lead
19:33 , Jamie BraidwoodA birdie-birdie finish with Corey Conners is rewarded with the clubhouse lead! The Canadian sets the best score of the day so far at -4, all thanks to that wonderful close. He left himself with 12 feet for birdie on 18 and rolls it in to join Hatton and Rose at the top of the leaderboard.
Leaderboard: (-4) Corey Conners, Tyrrell Hatton, Justin Rose (-3) Scottie Scheffler (-2) Aaron Rai, Collin Morikawa, Jason Day

Justin Rose joins Tyrrell Hatton in the lead
19:26 , Jamie BraidwoodA fourth birdie of the day for Justin Rose as he takes a shot away from the par-5 eighth! He joins Tyrrell Hatton at the top, as his fellow Englishman keeps up his clean card with a par on the par-5 13th after having a look at a birdie.
Leaderboard: (-4) Tyrrell Hatton, Justin Rose (-3) Scottie Scheffler, Corey Conners (-2) Aaron Rai, Collin Morikawa, Jason Day

Trouble for Collin Morikawa
19:22 , Jamie BraidwoodMorikawa goes long of the green on the par-5 15th and ends up down the steep bank that runs away from putting surface back down the hill. His chip back up the slope gets stuck on the ridge and leaves a long par putt. Morikawa ends up short and he drops a shot.
There have not been many birdies in the closing stretch today but Corey Conners has made a birdie at 17 to join the chasing pack on -3
Leaderboard: (-4) Tyrrell Hatton, Justin Rose (-3) Scottie Scheffler, Corey Conners (-2) Aaron Rai, Collin Morikawa, Jason Day
Rory McIlroy at the fourth
19:15 , Jamie BraidwoodMcIlroy’s first par-3 of the week: he lands it on the green but it’s way left of the hole, about 60 feet away. That said, it’s not far from where Scheffler rattled in a brilliant birdie putt earlier.
It’s a long way but up the green for McIlroy and he has to give it a big whack. It rolls about five feet past so still work to do to make his par. Oh, hang on, it was much further away than that, maybe 10 feet. But McIlroy keeps cool and rolls it in. Great save.
Among the other big names now out on the course, 2023 Masters champion Jon Rahm has gone par-bogey-bogey to start his round and the putter has been to blame...
McIlroy score: -1 (thru 4)
Missed chance for Scheffler
19:13 , Jamie BraidwoodScheffler looks to have played the par-5 13th perfectly... until the birdie putt back up the hill lips out! It’s a three-putt for Scheffler and he will have to settle for par.
Speaking of par-5s, Bryson DeChambeau regrets ever saying that they may as well be par-4s for him at Augusta. But the American has birdied his first of the week at the second.
Leaderboard: (-4) Tyrrell Hatton (-3) Collin Morikawa, Scottie Scheffler,, Justin Rose (-2) Aaron Rai, Corey Conners, Jason Day
Rory McIlroy at the third
18:58 , Jamie BraidwoodDriver for McIlroy on the par-4 third: he sends it down the middle of the fairway and takes the bunkers of either side out of play.
In fact, McIlroy boomed his drive so far that he can take a wedge out of his bag and clip a chip onto the green... it’s a beauty and McIlroy will have three feet for birdie.
IN IT GOES! McIlroy gets his first birdie of the week. Also in this group, Ludvig Aberg chips in for three and Akshay Bhatia makes back-to-back birdies.
McIlroy score: -1 (thru 3)
Tyrrell Hatton takes the Masters lead
18:55 , Jamie BraidwoodTyrrell Hatton has been calm and composed through the first two-thirds of his round, but finds a moment of magic on 12. A wonderful approach of the par-3 sets up a birdie chance and the Englishman rolls it in to move to -4. We have a new leader.
Leaderboard: (-4) Tyrrell Hatton (-3) Collin Morikawa, Scottie Scheffler,, Justin Rose (-2) Aaron Rai, Corey Conners
Collin Morikawa enters the chat
18:43 , Jamie BraidwoodHello Collin Morikawa! There was a huge cheer somewhere at Augusta and it’s the former Open champion and last year’s Masters runner-up scoring an eagle-three on the par-5 13th. Very nice indeed from Morikawa, who rolls in a beauty of a putt down the hill. Stunning.
In the same group, Niemann also went for the green in two but found the creek. He somehow got it up from the stones but drops a shot. Elsewhere, Scheffler isn’t too far away from birdie at 12th but comes away with a fine par, as does Hatton with a cool up-and-down from the side of the green at 11.
Leaderboard: (-3) Collin Morikawa, Scottie Scheffler, Tyrrell Hatton, Justin Rose (-2) Aaron Rai, Corey Conners
Rory McIlroy at the second
18:33 , Jamie BraidwoodMcIlroy’s first par-5 of the week, and he finds the bunker of the right side of the fairway, by the dog-leg.
The lie is ok, with the ball landing in the middle of the trap, and McIlroy is able to get a full swung on it with the iron to get it back onto the fairway.
The approach to the green doesn’t quite go to plan, either, skipping into the fringe, but avoiding any danger.
He left himself some work to do with the pitch back down the hill, but McIlroy comes away with the par. The second has been the easiest hole on the course today, but McIlroy makes five.
McIlroy score: E (thru 2)

Scottie Scheffler at Amen Corner
18:30 , Jamie BraidwoodScheffler, already the early leader on the opening day of the Masters, works his way to a steady par on the 11th after landing his approach to the right and making his up-and-down for four. He’ll head onto the par-3 12th next.
Justin Rose backs up his excellent start with a par save on the fifth. He rattled that towards the hole with pace and looks relieved to get away with it!
Leaderboard: (-3) Scottie Scheffler, Tyrrell Hatton, Justin Rose (-2) Joaquin Niemann, Brian Campbell, Laurie Canter
Rory McIlroy at the first
18:21 , Jamie BraidwoodMcIlroy takes a step back as he watches his ball approach the green... and it’s a beauty, landing on the green and in the narrow slip between the pin and the bunker. He’ll have an early chance at birdie.
It’s downhill, and left to right. McIlroy trickles it towards the hole... and it fades away to the right. An opening par.
Rory McIlroy tees off at the Masters
18:15 , Jamie BraidwoodHere we go again. Rory McIlroy is underway at the Masters as he chases the green jacket and looks to complete the career grand slam. There have been heartbreaks in the past, and McIlroy is prepared to put his heart on the line once more in his attempt to conquer Augusta. He will look to make a solid start and chase Scottie Scheffler.
McIlroy is playing with Ryder Cup team-mate Ludvig Aberg (who is among the contenders) and Akshay Bhatia.
Masters leader Stephan Jaeger makes a double bogey
18:10 , Jamie BraidwoodDisaster for Stephan Jaeger, who has led the Masters on his own for the last hour or so but his reign at the top meets a watery end on the par-5 13th. Jaeger went for the green in two but his shot rolled back into the creek. The German ends up carding a double-bogey seven, leaving Scheffler, Hatton and Rose on top.
Leaderboard: (-3) Scottie Scheffler, Tyrrell Hatton, Justin Rose (-2) Harris English , Brian Harman, Stephan Jaeger, Joaquin Niemann, Brian Campbell, Matt McCarty
Scottie Scheffler reaches the turn
17:56 , Jamie BraidwoodThree birdies, six pars. Scottie Scheffler reaches the turn in 33 and looks to be in total control out there. He got a huge boost with a monster birdie putt from 60ft on the second hole, sure, but he hasn’t put a foot wrong.
Tyrrell Hatton, who is playing in the group behind Scheffler, is also off to a fantastic start and has picked up another birdie at the par-5 eighth.
He’s on -3 too, as is Justin Rose! The 44-year-old has made it three birdies in a row to start his round. A birdie a hole would probably win the Masters if he keeps this up.
Leaderboard: (-4) Stephan Jaeger (-3) Scottie Scheffler, Tyrrell Hatton, Justin Rose (-2) Joaquin Niemann, Brian Campbell, Matt McCarty
Aaron Rai sunk by Amen Corner
17:48 , Jamie BraidwoodAaron Rai has dropped his third shot in a row through Amen Corner, though he will not be the last player to be sunk by the iconic stretch. This time, on the par-5 13th, Rai made the call to lay up but got into a poor position. His par putt lipped out. The Englishman is still in a good position at -1.
Elsewhere, Justin Rose, who lost out to Sergio Garcia in the 2017 Masters, is off to an excellent start on his 20th Masters. He’s two under through two.
Leaderboard: (-4) Stephan Jaeger (-3) Scottie Scheffler, Tyrrell Hatton (-2) Joaquin Niemann, Brian Campbell, Matt McCarty, Justin Rose
Another birdie for Scheffler
17:36 , Jamie BraidwoodOhhhh hello Scottie Scheffler! Such confidence from the World No 1 and he takes a shot away from the par-5 eighth to move to -3. Scheffler made an excellent up and down from little hollow by the green, but tucks away his birdie putt from 12 feet or so, just dropping in.
Leaderboard: (-4) Stephan Jaeger (-3) Scottie Scheffler (-2) Aaron Rai, Joaquin Niemann, Tyrrell Hatton, Brian Campbell, Matt McCarty
Ominous start from the defending champ
16:35 , Jamie BraidwoodThat monster birdie putt from Scottie Scheffler went rattling into the hole from 60ft. Can you be on the move less than two hours into the first day of the Masters? Well, if anyone can it’s the World No 1 and defending champion. He follows it with a par at the fifth.
Leaderboard: (-4) Aaron Rai; (-3) Stephan Jaeger; (-2) Joaquin Niemann, Scottie Scheffler, Jordan Spieth, Tyrrell Hatton
Scheffler holes out from 60ft
16:23 , Luke BakerOh hello Scottie Scheffler! On the par-three 4th, he’s got a birdie putt from downtown Augusta, races it towards the hole and it finds the bottom of the cup.
That was probably 60 feet and if it wasn’t right on line, it was 10 feet by but it rattles home. The world No 1 is suddenly at two-under. Ominous...
Behind him on the course, Jordan Spieth and Tyrrell Hatton appear to be spurring each other on as they both birdie the 2nd to follow their shots gained at the 1st. They’re also at -2 now.
Leaderboard: (-4) Aaron Rai; (-3) Stephan Jaeger; (-2) Joaquin Niemann, Scottie Scheffler, Jordan Spieth, Tyrrell Hatton
