He was the feline who made cat lovers all around the globe as delighted as they were jealous. A superstar of the four-legged celebrity world. A social media VIP. An icon.
Using the past tense when talking about Clive, the cat who graciously allowed Kate Beckinsale to share his Hollywood mansion, is almost too heartbreaking to bear, but unfortunately we now must.
On Tuesday, Kate posted an Instagram selfie cuddling her beloved moggy, who was wearing a pink pig print fleece onesie – stylish to the end – and broke some devastating news to her 5.6million followers.
“Clive has died,” she began.
“Every single part of my house feels like he should be in it.
“If anyone is expecting to hear from me, you may not for a bit and I’m sorry. My heart is absolutely and totally broken. 2004-2023.”
Obviously 19 is a very good innings but that doesn’t soften the blow. Nothing could. There’s not a pet owner on the planet who won’t relate to Kate’s poignant description of expecting to see their dearly departed in every room.
So let’s now remember Clive in brighter days, as he submitted to being dressed up in fabulous costumes, lazing on pool inflatables, and out on a lead. Condolences, Kate.
RIP Clive. We couldn’t forget you if we tried.
