The man who refuses to leave his home in war-torn Ukraine despite buildings collapsing around him

In a hard-hitting documentary by Channel 4, many emotional stories from the current Ukrainian war are told. This includes the story of Sergey who despite losing his arm when his apartment was bombed refuses to leave his home city of Kharkiv.

Dispatches Ukraine: Life Under Attack will air on Monday, June, 27 at 10pm on Channel 4. In the documentary, viewers are told the story of Sergey.

Sergey lives in a suburb of Kharkiv, where 400,000 people used to live but now many of them have fled the area for their safety. Sergey, however, refused to leave his home.

The documentary shows Sergey re-visiting his destroyed apartment and finding his favourite mug on the floor in the rubble. He described what happened when the bomb hit his building.

He said: "I was standing here, near the table, I was making lunch. Then a shell hit the flat, there was a flash. I wanted to hide but my arm was exposed and the force of the blast threw me to the ground."

Sergey spoke about the moment he realised he had lost his arm. He said: "So I was just laying in the rubble then someone found me, dragged me out by the collar. I looked down, my arm was missing, I was in shock. My finger was also missing."

Other stories in the documentary include following firefighters, Roman and his team, and paramedics, who are helping the innocent civilians who had become victims of war. Hard-hitting scenes such as the funeral of a firefighter and a paramedic's attempt to save a man who later died in hospital were also shown.

Since his flat was destroyed Sergey is living in a school basement, with many others who have also had their homes destroyed. Later in the documentary Sergey is shown attending an appointment where his hand which he lost the finger is re-bandaged, with distant gunfire heard in the background.

Sergey spoke about why he never left Kharkiv. He said: "Why should I go somewhere far away? This is my home...if we are helped a bit we shall keep on living here. This is my motherland."
