'The man to beat' - Liverpool's Virgil van Dijk named 'best defender' in Premier League by William Gallas

William Gallas has named Virgil van Dijk as the best central defender in the Premier League and believes the Liverpool defender will reach his 'best level' this upcoming season. Van Dijk returned from an ACL in the summer of 2021.

The former Arsenal and Chelsea defender thinks winning the Community Shield has 'laid down a marker' for Liverpool after they beat title rivals Manchester City 3-1 last Saturday. Trent Alexander-Arnold, Mohamed Salah and Darwin Nunez all got on the scoresheet in Leicester.

As the new season is set to start this weekend, Gallas believes Liverpool are ready to go as they take on newly-promoted Fulham at Craven Cottage on Saturday.

Gallas told Genting Casino when asked who the Premier League's best defender is: " Virgil van Dijk. Even though last season, I don’t think he was at his absolute best when he came back from injury, but what he showed for a player that was injured for such a long time, he was magnificent. This season I think he will reach his best level, so for me, Van Dijk is the man to beat in the Premier League."

The former defender highlighted how Liverpool have sent out a strong message to Premier League champions City: "When you win the Community Shield it is very important because it lays down a marker for the rest of the season. It is an opportunity to show that as a team you’re ready – your new signings are ready, the players are fit.

"Winning the trophy gives you a lot of confidence before you start the Premier League season, so for Liverpool I think it's good because they’ve sent out a strong message to Manchester City. We know that the season will be very long, but the most important thing for any side in the league is to start the season with a win.

"If you’re a top side, you must make sure that you win your first game and, of course, the Community Shield is a good confidence boost for anyone that wins it. It looks like Liverpool are ready to go."
