The major problem with Swansea City's transfer priority and the danger that constantly lurks

All the talk on social media in the aftermath of Swansea City's 1-0 defeat to Blackpool on Saturday was about the "big summer ahead".

There are eleven games to go of the campaign, and with Swansea in no danger of going down or troubling the play-off contenders, it will be an opportunity for head coach Russell Martin to further work on his ideas.

The main feeling coming away from the seaside on Saturday was one of frustration - for the 2,000 or so who made the journey up and for the manager himself.

“I am really disappointed with the result and I am really angry about the goal we conceded because that was something we spoke about,” said the Swans boss in the aftermath of the game.

“It is so basic, and we allow a block to happen that we shouldn’t, and their biggest threat scores a free header. That is unacceptable.

“But if you take that aside, I thought the way we responded was really good. They are a very good side at defending a lead, and we gave them something to defend.

“Overall we were so dominant, even on a tough pitch, the guys showed the courage they have and the intensity was really good. The guys gave it everything.

“When a team is defending a 1-0 lead, especially a team who are so good out of possession, it becomes hard and we maybe lacked a bit of conviction in the final third.

“We waited a long time to get that big chance and the difference is that from the same area in which Madine scored their goal, we don’t take ours.

“But I am not dissatisfied with the performance. To come away from home and be so dominant, so controlled against a team who have had good results recently, was excellent.

“We were the team being positive, we were the aggressors and in control. Unfortunately for us it did not come to enough, and that was down to the fact we gave them something to defend.

“We know we have stuff to work on, we have always known that. We have a young team, the team we finished the game with was very young, and we are learning and going through the process of hard work.

“We are showing signs of being the team we want to be, and the only thing we are lacking is a goal. It’s about converting what we are doing into that end product, but we have carried a real threat in a number of games recently.”

There have been positive signs from this Swansea team under Martin but they were not on display at Bloomfield Road on Saturday.

They certainly were at The Hawthorns, they were for 40 minutes against Fulham before Ryan Manning's red card, but on other occasions they have struggled to break down teams who are more than happy to cede possession. They were blunt in Lancashire and despite plenty of possession again, they posed little threat in the final third.

It was a familiar tale.

Martin has at times had to play players in unfamiliar positions because he hasn't the strength in depth he needs. We've seen Joel Latibeaudiere at the left wingback, where Hannes Wolf has also featured. Flynn Downes has slotted in at centre-back.

It's an issue that needs to be addressed.

When it comes to their transfer priority this summer, a problem arises, as it is not just one position they need to strengthen, it is a host.

This team needs more goalpower, meaning a striker is likely needed to help Joel Piroe and Michael Obafemi.

As said above, unlocking teams has been an issue for Swansea, which points towards a creative addition.

There is little pace in this side, which should be addressed, and one gets the impression that Martin would like a ball-playing centre-half to help the way Swansea play out from the back.

All this will have to be done against the backdrop of trying to keep hold of players who have impressed this term. That danger will always lurk in the background.

Piroe is on track for 20 goals in his first season in the Championship - no mean feat for a 22-year-old. Downes has been superb since his arrival from Ipswich Town and is set for a big future in the game. Matt Grimes, although tied down to a longer-term contract, will always attract admiring glances and Jamie Paterson's contract will still need to be sorted this summer.

There is likely to be a clearout of the players who Martin feels don't fit his system and the intensity with which he wants to play. Yan Dhanda is set to move on, Jay Fulton's future is unclear, Wolf's loan stint will end and decisions will need to be made over the stars who are currently plying their trade away from the Swansea.com Stadium.

It points to a hectic summer yet again.

There is no commodity as valuable as time, though.

You get the impression that with a proper pre-season under their belts, these players will only improve. Martin had a matter of days before this season got under way and whenever he has had time this term to work with his squad at Fairwood, you can always see an improvement.

Trust the process has been a phrase trotted out on many occasions over the course of the campaign; perhaps another one would be "have patience in the process". This was never going to be an overnight transformation.

But games like Saturday cannot become the rule. A cutting edge must be applied to the mounds of possession Swansea are totting up.

This squad is still so thin; it needs bolstering this summer. But that could be easier said than done.
