Located in the heart of one of Cheshire’s best-known villages is a pretty ivy-clad thatched cottage. From the outside it looks like a traditional country dwelling, yet step inside and you’ll discover an interior which is straight out of a Harry Potter film.
The aptly named Wizard’s Thatch is a small hotel which has three self-contained suites with no shortage of magic between them - it’s also been dubbed one of the “most romantic places to stay” in England. The higgedly-piggedly building offers guests a unique experience where rooms are full of oldie-worldie furniture, antiques and Tudor-style décor.
Despite its rustic appearance, the cottage lies in the centre of Alderley Edge and it is just a few minutes’ walk away from the village’s restaurants and bars, which are often popular haunts with celebrities. The cottage is a short distance from The Edge, a sandstone escarpment with glorious countryside views.

Thanks to its quirky character, Wizards Thatch has hosted visitors from across the world, including a government minister. The hotel has also featured in an episode of Channel 4’s Four in a Bed.
The cottage is named after a local legend which states that a farmer encountered a wizard on his way to the market. According to the myth, the wizard bought the horse from the farmer after it failed to sell and revealed a group of sleeping knights contained within the rock, who will awake should England fall into danger.
Wizard’s Thatch certainly plays on the magical legend. Inside there are three suites: Camelot, Merlin and The Wizardry. Each one has a small kitchen area with a microwave, toaster, fridge, cutlery and crockery - perfect for a short stay - as well as private outdoor seating areas.
Sleeping up to four adults, the Camelot suite has an impressive 17th century fireplace, gorgeous red leather seats and is packed with antiques. The highlight is the luxurious 7 by 6ft four poster bed, which is draped in red and gold tapestries in the master bedroom - you’ll wake up thinking you’re in Hogwarts.
The Merlin is the most colourful suite painted in a patchwork of bright, jewelled tones crisscrossed with exposed wooden beams. This suite sleeps two and has a comfortable double four-poster bed.
Set in the oldest part of the building, guests enter the Wizardry suite through an old thatched porch which takes you into the low beamed lounge area. Painted in a rich Arabian red, the walls are decorated with memorabilia and mesmerising trinkets. Like the Camelot, this room also has a 7ft by 6ft four poster bed.
Wizards Thatch is ideal for a getaway with a loved one and special packages are available for romantic breaks and honeymoons. For more information and to book a room, visit the Wizard’s Thatch website.
