Whether you’re a history buff, a hopeless romantic or a Game of Thrones fan, you can’t deny the thought of spending a few nights in a castle is alluring. With heaps of historical features and tons of character, there’s something magical about them.
Staying in a castle is like stepping back in time - think stone fireplaces, four poster beds and roll top baths. It’s the ultimate escape, especially during the winter when cosy fireplaces are even more appealing.
Hidden away in the Cheshire countryside is a magnificent castle which offers you the most luxurious of stays. Situated in woodland at the north end of the Peckforton Hills, Peckforton Castle is around a 90 minutes’ drive from Manchester.

At first glance it has everything you’d expect from a castle; thick red sandstone walls, a dry moat, a portcullis and turrets. Looks can be deceiving, though, as it’s actually a Victorian country house built in the style of a mediaeval castle.
The land was bought by John Tollemache, a wealthy Cheshire landowner and work began on the castle in 1842, with the building completed in 1851. It was first used as family home and then when the last member of the Tollemache family moved out, it was used as home for disabled evacuee children during WWII.
During the second half of the 20th century various films and shows were filmed there, including Doctor Who. It was later transformed into a hotel.
Today guests can enjoy all the characteristics of a mediaeval castle, without any of the discomforts. The castle has 48 guest rooms, each one offering a mixture of classic and contemporary décor.
All the rooms have period features transporting you to a different era. You can choose from cosy single rooms, classic doubles and executive rooms with luxurious touches.
For the ultimate castle experience, a stay in the four poster bedroom is a must. You really will feel as if you’ve woken up in a fairytale.
Peckforton Castle has two restaurants which are open to both hotel guests and visitors. The award-winning 1851 restaurant serves classic French and British cuisine, serving sophisticated dishes such as chicken with lobster and squash, and sea bream served with cauliflower, romanesco and clams.
For a more informal experience the 2010 Brasserie offers classic meals as well as lighter bites. The brasserie is located in the former scullery of the castle, which has been lovingly restored while retaining original features including the windows and two cast iron cooking ranges, which date back to the 1840s.
The brasserie also serves afternoon tea where you can tuck into finger sandwiches, patisseries and scones. At Peckforton Castle you can enjoy an indulgent version served with a glass of Joseph Perrier Champagne or a gin and tonic.
Double rooms with bed and breakfast are available from £205. For more information and to book a room, visit the Peckforton Castle website.
