The lost Edinburgh 'slums' that were completely wiped from the city's map

In the post-war era, Edinburgh witnessed a slum clearance programme the scale of which had never been seen before.

Working class communities living in overcrowded and insanitary 'slum' districts were dispersed and the homes they had inhabited for generations razed to the ground as the city sought to improve conditions.

Areas such as the Dumbiedykes, Greenside and Leith saw the most radical changes as modern developments replaced the crumbling and inadequate tenements of yesteryear.
