The Loop: Trivago hit with $45 million fine, breaking down climate change policy promises, new suspect in Madeleine McCann case

Hello. It's Friday, April 22 and you're reading The Loop, a quick wrap-up of today's news.

Let's start here

Global hotel booking giant Trivago has been fined nearly $45 million for misleading customers with advertising that claimed it made it easy to find "the best price" for rooms.

Justice Mark Moshinsky noted Trivago's breaches of the law were "extremely serious".

"The television advertising conducted by Trivago during the early part of the relevant period was highly misleading," he said.

Trivago said it was "disappointed with the outcome".

What else is going on

  • The NSW government's ability to pass legislation is in doubt after a key independent spoke up against Premier Dominic Perrottet's comments on transgender people in sport (if you missed it, here's some more on how that unfolded). Sydney MP Alex Greenwich says young trans Australians are being used as a "political punching bag", and that he'll consider withdrawing his support for supply and confidence in the government if the Premier maintains his current stance.
  • Vote Compass data has revealed that more Australians mentioned climate change as their number one issue than any other topic. So we've broken down the policies of the major parties, the Coalition, Labor and the Greens, to see where they're at with it before you cast your vote in the federal election.

What Australia has been searching for online

  • Madeleine McCann. Portuguese prosecutors say a man had been formally identified as a suspect in the disappearance of the British toddler 15 years ago. The man has denied any involvement in Madeleine's disappearance.
  • Mike Tyson. The former heavyweight champion has been filmed punching a fellow passenger onboard a plane at San Francisco International Airport. Police spoke to both of the men involved but they've both been released pending further investigations.

One more thing

News from earlier this week that one of footballer Cristiano Ronaldo's newborn twins had died moved people worldwide.

If you haven't already, have a read of this story by ABC's Audio News and Current Affairs editor Fiona Ellis-Jones about the loss of one of her own twins.

There's a small and bittersweet update to Ronaldo and partner Georgina's story: their new baby daughter has joined her brothers and sisters at home.

Ronaldo has thanked fans for their support and says it's now "time to be grateful for the life that we’ve just welcomed into this world".
