- Police officer Caroline Edwards has described the US Capitol riots as being like a "war scene" in the first of multiple public hearings into the deadly incident. Vice-chair Liz Cheney said the next hearing, expected to be held next week, would show that former US president Donald Trump knew he had lost the election and went on to engage in a "massive effort to spread false and fraudulent information".
- Anthony Albanese has indicated Australia may soften its policy on deporting criminals with New Zealand citizenship after concerns were again raised by Jacinda Ardern, who's visiting at the moment. Ms Ardern says NZ isn't looking for Australia to change its policy — just more consideration when deporting people with "zero connection to New Zealand, sometimes not even having stepped foot there".

- Britney Spears. Authorities say the singer's ex-husband Jason Alexander has been arrested for crashing the site of her wedding just hours before the ceremony.
