The Loop: Police reveal Medibank hackers, 'dangerous storms' on the way, Ukraine advances in Kherson

Hello, it's Friday, November 11. Here's what you need to get caught up on today's news.

Police have revealed who was behind the Medibank hack

The Australian Federal Police have identified the hackers responsible for the Medibank cyber attack as members of the REvil group — a group of cyber criminals in Russia.

While it was widely believed that Russian hackers were responsible for the breach, it's unusual for the government to attribute an attack like this.

At a press conference this afternoon, AFP Commissioner Reece Kershaw said police believe they know the identities of the individuals, but won't be releasing that information.

"We know who you are and moreover, the AFP has some significant runs on the scoreboard when it comes to bringing overseas offenders back to Australia to face the justice system," Commissioner Kershaw said.

ABC defence reporter Andrew Greene said while REvil isn't considered part of the Russian state, it operates with the protection of Russian President Vladimir Putin.

He also said Australia was unlikely to receive any cooperation from Russian authorities, especially after the government's strong support of Ukraine in the war.

The weather bureau is warning of 'very dangerous storms' this weekend

Here's the lowdown:

  • The Bureau of Meteorology said thunderstorms this weekend could cause flooding along rivers in NSW's Central West and South West.
  • Authorities said residents in already saturated catchments — including towns like Forbes, Condobolin, Hay, Condobolin, Narrandera, Cobar, Bourke — should be on alert for the potential of evacuations.
  • The main rivers of focus for the SES continue to be the Lachlan, Murrumbidgee, Barwon, Darling and Murray
  • Authorities in Victoria have also warned of a renewed flood risk, with showers and potentially severe thunderstorms expected in central and eastern parts of the state this afternoon and a chance of heavy rainfall and storms on Saturday and Sunday.

The news Australia is searching for

Lest we forget: People from around Australia have gathered to commemorate Remembrance Day in honour of those who have died while serving the country.

This year's national service at the Australian War Memorial in Canberra — the first since 2019 without COVID restrictions — was attended by more than 1,000 people who observed a minute's silence at 11am AEST.

Today marks 104 years since the guns fell silent, marking the end of World War I.

News you might have missed

  • The families of a young couple and their newborn baby who were killed in a deliberately lit fire in Melbourne nearly two years ago, say the 13-year sentence handed down to the arsonist is inadequate.
  • Ukrainian forces have advanced in Kherson after Russia ordered its troops to withdraw. Ukraine's defence minister said it would take Russia at least a week to withdraw its troops from the city and that it still had forces around the city and on the west bank of the Dnipro River.

That's it for now

We'll be back Monday with more.
