The Loop: PM calls on China to condemn Russia, Thai police question Shane Warne fan who 'wanted to pay her respects', Ukrainian couple marry on war front line

Hi there. It's Monday, March 7 and you're staying in The Loop with this quick wrap of today's headlines.

Let's start here

Prime Minister Scott Morrison declared in a foreign policy speech to the Lowy Institute that it's "up to China" to demonstrate its commitment to global peace and condemn Russia's invasion of Ukraine.

The PM says China has more power than any other country to halt the invasion and accused the country of banding together with Russia to undermine international rules.

Catch up on some of his address here:

What else is going on

  • Thai police have questioned a German woman who got into the back of the ambulance transporting Shane Warne's body from the island of Koh Samui. The woman, carrying a bunch of flowers, was allowed to spend about 40 seconds alone in the van, raising serious questions about security surrounding the transportation of Warne's body
  • Hundreds of thousands of Ukrainian civilians attempting to flee to safety have been forced to shelter from Russian shelling that pummelled multiple Ukrainian cities, leaving corpses in the streets. Ukraine officials described "catastrophic" situations during failed evacuation efforts in Kyiv's suburbs

One more thing

A Ukrainian couple who have been together for 22 years have been married on the front line of the fight against Russia.

Lesia Ivashchenko left her job to join territorial defence forces when the war with Russia started, and says the camo-clad wedding ceremony to her now-husband Valerii Fylymonov was actually a surprise.

"I expected to have a very modest ceremony," she said.

"I thought, we'll just say 'yes' to each other.

Even the Mayor of Kyiv, former champion boxer Vitali Klitschko, made an appearance to congratulate the newlyweds.

While we're talking about the human impact on Ukraine, this video of a little girl singing Let It Go from Frozen has also captured many a heart:

Ukrainian resident Marta Smekhova shared the video online and says Amelia dreams of singing "on a big stage in front of the audience".
