Coming up: Countdown to rates decision

Economists are questioning the merit of the Reserve Bank's decision to increase interest rates so quickly amid predictions of another rate rise later today.

The RBA has already lifted interest rates for four months in a row, quickly taking its official cash rate target from a record low 0.1 cent to 1.85 per cent.

As you may have seen earlier, the Commonwealth Bank has warned that there's a real risk to the economy if rates rise quickly, with borrowers only just feeling the effects of the first two rate rises.

Most analysts and traders are expecting another half-a-percentage-point increase today, to 2.35 per cent — the highest it's been since early 2015.

We're expecting to hear from the RBA this afternoon.

Just in: Former Coalition staffer releases details of $650,000 settlement

Rachelle Miller has released the details of her $650,000 settlement with the Commonwealth, after she alleged abuse by her former boss and then-government minister Alan Tudge.

Ms Miller claimed she was subject to bullying, harassment and discrimination while working for Mr Tudge and for former government minister Michaelia Cash.

Mr Tudge and Senator Cash deny the allegations.

"Taxpayers have a right to know about the outcomes of complaints made against elected officials, particularly if a settlement was paid," Ms Miller says.

Political reporter Jake Evans has the full story on this here.

Typhoon nears South Korea coast

Hundreds of flights have been grounded and more than 200 people have been evacuated as Typhoon Hinnamnor neats the southern region of South Korea.

The Typhoon is bringing heavy rains and winds of up to 170 kilometers per hour, putting the nation on alert for its worst storm in decades.

Government officials raised concern about potentially huge damage from flooding, landslides and tidal waves triggered by the typhoon.

Prime Minister Han Duk-soo has called for proactive efforts to evacuate residents in areas vulnerable to flooding.

“This is forecast to be a historically strong typhoon that we never experienced before,” Han said.

News while you snoozed: Trump gets his 'special master'

A couple of weeks ago, Donald Trump asked a US court to block the FBI from reviewing materials seized from his Mar-a-Lago home, pending the appointment of a special master.

Overnight, his request was granted — despite much of the investigation into the seized documents already having occurred.

The decision "authorizes an outside legal expert to review the records taken during the August 8 search and to weed out from the rest of the investigation any that might be protected by claims of attorney-client privilege or executive privilege", AP explains.

"The Court is mindful that restraints on criminal prosecutions are disfavored, but finds that these unprecedented circumstances call for a brief pause to allow for neutral, third-party review to ensure a just process with adequate safeguards," US District Judge Aileen Cannon wrote in her 24-page order.

Developing news: Zaporizhzhia power plant cut off from Ukrainian grid again

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy says the Zaporizhzhia nuclear power station has been cut off from the national grid for a second time.

He accused Russian shelling of causing the cut-off and said the plant was again "a step away from a radiation catastrophe".

The International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) said the backup power line had been cut to extinguish a fire ahead of its presentation of a report on the situation at the plant today.

"The shelling of the (plant's) territory means that the terrorist state does not care what the IAEA will say, it is not concerned about what the international community will decide," Zelenskyy said in his nightly video message.

Australians are searching for: Tracy Grimshaw's ACA departure

The long-time host of A Current Affair announced during last night's program that she's stepping down after almost two decades behind the desk.

"I have some news that I wanted you to hear from me before you hear it from anyone else," the 62-year-old said at the end of the show.

"I've decided to finish up with A Current Affair this year.

"It's been a big decision, huge actually, and before the gossip websites start telling you rubbish, I want you to know it's been my decision alone, and I'm not being shoved out the door by the boys club because I'm too old.

"I'm not too old. I'm just a bit tired. And for the record, both the boys and the girls have asked me to stay."

She says it's been an "absolute privilege" to host the show that was "required viewing each night" for her and her family from a young age — something I'm sure a lot of Aussies have in common.

A mum-of-two, a widower, a first responder and a 14-year-old boy are among the victims of the deadly stabbing spree in Saskatchewan yesterday.

Ivor and Darryl Burns from the James Smith Cree Nation told Reuters that their sister, Gloria Burns (pictured below), was killed.

Darryl said his sister was a first responder who went to a crisis call and got caught in the violence.

Residents in the village of Weldon in Saskatchewan identified another of the victims in the community as Wes Petterson, a 77-year-old widower.

"He was just a lovely man," friend Doreen Lees said.

Friends and family Lana Head, a mother of two daughters, paid tribute to her on social media.

"Not the way I wanted her to leave this world," childhood friend Melodie Whitecap posted.

Coming up: The RBA's decision on interest rates

We're set to hear from the Reserve Bank later on today — and it's almost certainly going to announce another increase to the official cash rate.

The RBA has already lifted interest rates four months in a row, quickly taking its official cash rate target from a record low 0.1 per cent to 1.85 per cent — and many are expecting another half-a-percentage-point increase this afternoon.

But the Commonwealth Bank is now warning that there's a "clear risk" that the RBA will lift interest rates too high, too fast because of the lags in how they are passed on to mortgage customers and affect their cash flow and spending.

Business reporters Michael Janda and Rhiana Whitson explain it all here — check it out.
