Alleged Nazi sympathiser sentenced to four years' jail

The US Justice Department says a New Jersey man found guilty of charges related to the January 6 attacks on the Capitol has been sentenced to four years in prison.

The department said in a statement that the New Jersey man was sentenced on felony and misdemeanor charges stemming from his actions during the Capitol attack.

In May, he was found guilty by a federal jury of all five counts he faced, including obstruction of an official proceeding.

Prosecutors say the 32-year-old is a former member of the US Army Reserves who worked as a Navy contractor with a "secret" security clearance and access to weapons.

An informant told investigators that the man was "an avowed white supremacist and Nazi sympathiser" who had posted extreme political opinions online.

University student threatens to 'detonate the nuclear reactor' if football team loses

A university student in the US has been charged with making terrorist threats after she allegedly threatened to detonate a nuclear reactor if the school's football team failed to win.

The 21-year-old woman allegedly posted anonymously on social media that she "was going to detonate the nuclear reactor that is located in the University of Utah causing a mass destruction" if they lost to rivals, San Diego State University.

According to the charging documents, the student studied engineering and had knowledge of the university’s nuclear reactor.

The University of Utah is among more than two dozen US universities with nuclear engineering programs that use reactors for faculty and student research.

Boeing to pay $US200 million to settle charges it misled investors about 737 MAX

Boeing will pay $US200 million to settle civil charges that it misled investors about its 737 MAX, which was grounded for 20 months after two fatal crashes killed 346 people.

The US Securities and Exchange Commission charged Boeing and its former chief executive "with making materially misleading public statements following crashes of Boeing airplanes in 2018 and 2019".

Boeing confirmed the settlement and noted it did not admit or deny wrongdoing.

The crashes were linked to a flight control system called the Maneuvering Characteristics Augmentation System (MCAS).

The SEC said "after the first crash, Boeing and [former chief executive Dennis Muilenburg] knew that MCAS posed an ongoing airplane safety issue, but nevertheless assured the public that the 737 MAX airplane was 'as safe as any that has ever flown the skies.'"

After the second crash, the SEC said the company and Muilenburg "assured the public that there were no slips or gaps in the certification process with respect to MCAS, despite being aware of contrary information".

Medvedev mocks Moselle Open crowd

On today's episode of Tennis Players Behaving Really Well, Daniil Medvedev has mocked French fans who booed him for throwing his racket during a three-set defeat by Stan Wawrinka at the Moselle Open.

The former world number one lost his composure after going down 2-0 in the deciding set and sent his racket bouncing off the court, which led to some booing from the crowd.

The 26-year-old responded by giving the crowd two thumbs down and mocked their jeering, which only grew louder as more spectators joined in.

The chair umpire and Wawrinka attempted to calm the crowd. Medvedev ignored that and made a gesture as if to say that the fans had lost their minds before play resumed.

Wawrinka ended up winning 6-4 6-7(7) 6-3.

Why is a NASA spacecraft crashing into an asteroid?

In the first-of-its kind experiment, NASA is about to clobber an asteroid millions of kilometres away.

A spacecraft named Dart will zero in on the asteroid on Monday, with the impact expected to nudge the asteroid into a slightly tighter orbit around its companion space rock.

Scientists are hoping to demonstrate that if a killer asteroid ever heads our way, we’d stand a fighting chance of diverting it.

“This is stuff of science-fiction books and really corny episodes of StarTrek from when I was a kid, and now it’s real,” NASA program scientist Tom Statler says.

Cameras and telescopes will watch the crash, but it will take days or even weeks to find out if it actually changed the orbit.

I wouldn't raccoon-mend bringing this animal with you to the pub...

So, a woman and a raccoon walk into a bar...

It might sound like the start of a joke, but a woman in the US is facing criminal charges after bringing the furry friend with her to happy hour.

The 38-year-old North Dakota woman, who said said she found the raccoon on the side of the road about three months ago and named it Rocky, reportedly showed the animal to the bartender and other customers.

She's now facing a charge of "unlawful possession of furbearers", while health authorities have been forced to issue a warning about potential rabies exposure.

"It’s unfair and too much was done to detain an innocent raccoon,” the woman told local newspaper, the Bismarck Tribune.

CNN reporter's interview with Iranian President cancelled after headscarf demand

Veteran CNN journalist Christiane Amanpour has cancelled an interview with Iran's President Ebrahim Raisi after he demanded she wear a headscarf for their meeting in New York.

Amanpour says no previous presidents had requested this when she interviewed them outside Iran, and that Ebrahim Raisi's aide told her it was because of "the situation in Iran" and "a matter of respect".

"The aide made it clear that the interview would not happen if I did not wear a headscarf," she tweeted.

She explains what went down in more detail in this thread:

Raisi is in New York for the UN General Assembly.

Roger Federer's last hurrah is coming up

Swiss tennis great Roger Federer will play his farewell match tomorrow morning at the Laver Cup in London.

He'll team up with long-time rival Rafael Nadal in the doubles for Team Europe.

They're clearly having a good time preparing:

Federer and Nadal will face Team World's Jack Sock and Frances Tiafoe, who made the US Open semi-final just a couple of weeks ago — what an absolute cracker of a match that'll be.

Australia's Alex de Minaur will represent Team World against Andy Murray in the singles.

Alex Jones has been back in court

Infowars host Alex Jones has taken the witness stand in a defamation trial against him. It didn't go that well.

Lawyer Christopher Mattei played a video clip of Jones's webcast showing him praising his followers for placing Infowars stickers around the Connecticut courthouse during the trial.

Jones responded by referring to unspecified, purportedly destructive protests before suggesting that conservatives were being unfairly targeted.

"Conservatives put up stickers and we're bad, I know, we all need to go to prison," he said in a mocking tone.

His testimony prompted Judge Barbara Bellis to briefly dismiss jurors and discuss with lawyers how to contain Jones on the stand.

The defamation trial will determine how much Jones must pay in damages for spreading false claims that the US government staged the killing of 20 children and six staff members as a pretext for seizing guns.
