The Loop: Donald Trump announces 2024 presidential run, Russia tensions rise after missile hits Poland, and basketballer Isaac Humphries comes out as gay

Hi there. It's Wednesday, November 16, and you're reading The Loop, a quick wrap-up of today's news.

Let's start here: Donald Trump has announced his 2024 presidential run

After seemingly endless teasing, Donald Trump today announced he is running for president again in 2024.

Delivering a speech at his Mar-a-Lago resort in Florida, the former president vowed to "rescue the American dream".

Mr Trump, who has mounted relentless attacks on the integrity of US voting since his 2020 election defeat, told his supporters in the Republican Party: "Together we will be taking on the most corrupt forces and entrenched interests imaginable."

"This is a party that has become much bigger, much stronger, much more powerful [and] can do much more good for our country," he said.

Here's the moment he made the announcement, and the key quotes leading up to it:

Mr Trump's main challenger for the Republican nomination at this stage is Florida Governor Ron DeSantis, who is strongly in contention after being re-elected last week.

Today we heard about tensions with Russia rising after a missile hit Poland

The United States and its Western allies are scrambling to investigate reports that a blast which killed two people in Poland was caused by a Russian missile.

The Pentagon said it could not yet confirm that a Russian missile had crossed into the eastern Polish village of Przewodow, which is around 6 kilometres from the border of Ukraine.

Russia's defence minister denied its missiles were launched into Polish territory, describing the reports as a deliberate provocation.

Poland's President Andrzej Duda said his country had no concrete evidence showing exactly who fired the rocket.

Regardless, countries are now on high alert, and the incident has raised the risk of the war in Ukraine escalating by drawing other countries into the conflict.

The missile hit Poland not long after Russia fired nearly 100 other missiles at Ukraine's major cities.
