Hi there. It's Monday, May 30 and you're reading The Loop, a quick look at today's news.
Let's start here: The election vote count continues
- The Australian Electoral Commission is ready for another big day of vote counting, with three seats still too close to call
- More than a week on from the federal election, the Labor Party has secured 75 federal seats — just one short of being able to form a majority government, which would allow it to govern in its own right
The three seats which remain in doubt are:
- Macnamara in Victoria
- Deakin in Victoria
- Gilmore in New South Wales
For more details on those seats, check out this explainer.
Something you'll be hearing about today: Who will lead the Liberal and National parties?
The Liberal and National parties will meet today to decide who should lead them following the Coalition's election loss.
Here's what you need to know:
- Peter Dutton, a member of the party's conservative faction who first tried to secure the Liberal leadership in 2018 but lost to Scott Morrison, is running unopposed to become the next leader
- His deputy is expected to be former environment minister Sussan Ley, who isn't aligned with the conservative or moderate factions
- Leader Barnaby Joyce has made clear his intention to stay, and has insisted that he's delivered for regional Australia
- Deputy Nationals leader David Littleproud has confirmed he wants the promotion, and he's highly likely to be able to secure enough votes to succeed
- Victorian MP Darren Chester is also gunning for the top job. He told the ABC last week that voters want the party "to be perhaps more moderate and respectful in debates"
News while you snoozed
- Jai Hindley became the first Australian to win the Giro d'Italia. The 26-year-old cyclist said his win was "really incredible" and came with "a lot of emotions". His victory puts him alongside compatriot Cadel Evans, who made history when he won the 2011 edition of the Tour de France, as the only two Australians to have won a grand tour
- A flight with 22 people on board has gone missing in bad weather in Nepal. The Tara Air flight took off from the tourist town of Pokhara but lost contact with the control tower five minutes before it was due to land at Jomsom, a popular tourist and pilgrimage site
Here's what Australia has been searching for online
- Lester Piggott. The former champion British jockey, who won the Epsom Derby nine times and was widely considered one of the greatest riders of all time, has died at the age of 86. His family announced his death, which followed Piggott being admitted to hospital in Switzerland last week
- State of Origin 2022. The New South Wales Blues have named their 22-player squad for this year's Origin series, with coach Brad Fittler deciding to drop Josh Addo-Carr and hand Daniel Tupou an Origin recall as part of a plan to counteract Queensland's looming aerial threat. Stephen Crichton and Kotoni Staggs are both set to debut in the centres. The Maroons will name their squad today
One more thing: Where does all the money go?
During the election campaign, many people told the ABC they were worried about their finances, as the price of pretty much everything was increasing.
We want to keep that conversation going and hear from Australians across the country to help inform our coverage.
