The Lions hire John Morton as their new offensive coordinator

The Detroit Lions are hiring Broncos passing game coordinator and former Lions offensive assistant John Morton as their new offensive coordinator. Morton will take over the coordinator role for Ben Johnson, who left after the season to become the new head coach of the Chicago Bears.

Morton emerged as the leading candidate over the weekend and interviewed for the coordinator job. He has been with the Broncos for the last two seasons. In 2022, he was a Lions senior offensive assistant, and spent three seasons prior to that in the same role for the Raiders organization. He was the OC for the New York Jets in 2017 and has been in coaching for over 25 years.

While much of the offensive staff has departed, the Lions retained offensive line coach Hank Fraley. The team is still in need of replacing WR coach Antwaan Randle El and assistant QB coach J.T. Barrett, both of whom joined Johnson in Chicago with elevated roles.
