The Lion King musical is coming to Cardiff for a seven-week run in 2020

Disney's The Lion King is returning to Cardiff for a massive seven-week run.

The popular musical will be at the Wales Millennium Centre in Cardiff from July 9 to August 29, 2020 and tickets go on sale soon.

The role of Simba will be played by Nick Afoa who has been playing the role in the West End since 2013.

More than 130,000 people enjoyed the stage production in Cardiff in 2014 when it ran for 10 weeks and generated an estimated £5m for the local economy.

Graeme Farrow, the WMC's artistic and creative director, said: "We are thrilled to be welcoming this incredible musical back to Wales Millennium Centre next summer. It’s a timeless production which captures the imagination of audiences – both young and old.”

The Lion King has celebrated 20 years in the West End. The musical had its premiere in London on October 19, 1999, at the Lyceum Theatre, which remains its home in London.

With a cast of more than 50 actors, singers and dancers, the story of The Lion King is brought to life using masks, puppets and striking costumes to tell the story of Simba's epic adventures as he struggles to accept the responsibilities of adulthood and becoming king.
