The lighting trends set to be big news in 2025 – from colour hits to luxe layered schemes

As we enter a new year, with that comes a new set of trends set to transform our homes – and among others, that includes lighting trends. Indeed, lamps and lighting fixtures are subject to changing trends just like any home decor and our lighting and interior experts have given us a lowdown on the most defining styles for the year ahead.

Unlike many other home accessories and home decor trends, lighting has the power to completely transform a space, its mood and ambiance. Which is why choosing your lighting - from the tone and colour to the design of your light fixtures - is crucial to your overall room decor and styling.

Some probably won’t come as a surprise as these themes can be seen across living room trends and bedroom decor trends as well. But there are others that you probably wouldn’t expect to come up as a lighting trend – and yet, you’re likely to become obsessed with them pretty soon as it often happens when it comes to trends.

‘Minimalism has definitely been one of the go-to trends for a while now, with neutral, monochrome designs leading the way,’ says Marlena Kaminska, lead digital designer at ValueLights. ‘2024, however, saw a shift towards more individualistic styles to create their own unique spaces, making their home into their “happy place”. 2025 trends build on this even further. We’re seeing a shift away from minimalistic features and towards upping the feel-good-factor.’

So whether you’re looking for fresh living room lighting ideas or an interesting lamp to jazz up your home office with, there’s something for everyone.

1. Go for retro styles

Embracing vintage and retro-style homeware, furniture and accessories never goes out of style in our opinion – and that includes lighting. But in 2025, everyone will be taking inspiration from the past when choosing their lamps and lighting fixtures in a big way.

‘Retro styles have proved to be popular in 2024,’ says Ally Dowsing-Reynolds, co-founder and lighting expert from Dowsing & Reynolds. ‘And in 2025, we’re expecting to see more shapes and styles with vintage flair. For example, lighting styles with subtle details such as ribbed glass adds a certain timeless charm into room designs. Ribbed glass has a charming appeal that evokes a sense of nostalgia, adding a classic touch to any space and its interesting pattern and texture helps to create a captivating projection of light onto walls.’

Mary Buchanan, creative director at Laura Ashley Lighting, agrees, ‘Vintage-inspired lighting is poised to be a major interior trend in 2025 due to its timeless charm and the growing desire for unique, character-filled spaces. Vintage-inspired lighting offers a way to incorporate historical accents and craftsmanship into modern interiors, featuring more intricate detailing and warmer finishes than contemporary lighting. With the rising popularity of eclectic design styles, vintage lighting serves as both a functional and artistic focal point that is founded on rich design heritage and traditional values of quality and originality.’

2. Be bold with vibrant lighting

The bold, fun and colourful dopamine decor interior trend that became prominent last year is getting even bigger in 2025. And playful lamp designs in vibrant colours and maximalist patterns continue to be even more popular thanks to this.

‘We’ve seen the rise of dopamine decor and maximalism in 2024 and this is only set to be bigger and bolder in 2025 with Pinterest Predicts revealing searches for Vintage maximalism +260% in the last two years. Bold and bright will be the theme for 2025. Think eclectic prints, textures and clashing colours all layered together to create a vibrant and fun style. When it comes to your lighting, play with pops of colour and bring in colourful table lamps and lamp shades to make an eye-catching statement,’ Ally at Dowsing & Reynolds says.

Marlena at ValueLights continues, ‘If you’re a fan of contrasting colours and each element of a room really standing out, tap into the ever-popular dopamine dressing trend and pair your statement lamp with bright and bold wall art, cushions and accessories. Statement floor and table lamps work particularly well in living rooms and bedrooms, with both style and functionality coming into play. Bold and unique designs, along with brighter colours and fun patterns are featuring more in our lighting style choices in 2025.’

3. Layer your lighting

As the big ceiling light fell out of favour last year, we all started embracing the layered lighting method which consists of using several sources of light at any given time, creating a cosy ambiance in the room. And this is not going anywhere in 2025.

‘Layered lighting isn't anything new, but we predict we'll see lots more of this in 2025 thanks to the advancement of portable lighting options. Layered lighting techniques have become a popular style for those looking to bring layers of ambience and warmth into their homes. The effect can be achieved by layering ambient, task, and accent lighting through ceiling lights, pendants and table lamps to add depth and interest to your kitchen, living room, or bedroom,’ Ally at Dowsing & Reynolds says.

4. Opt for natural materials

This year, organic materials and inspiration from nature will continue to be high in demand as the biophilic design trend is here to stay. But opting for natural finishes over synthetics also adds to a cosy feeling in a home – so if you have some cosy living room ideas in mind, natural materials are the way to go.

‘Biophilic lighting is trending in 2025 as we focus on integrating natural elements into indoor spaces, which helps to promote wellbeing and reduce stress,’ says Lee Lovett, co-founder and creative director at The Soho Lighting Company. ‘This trend is part of a broader movement towards biophilic design, which aims to reconnect people with nature in their everyday environments. Overall, biophilic lighting represents a fusion of nature and technology, aiming to create healthier and more harmonious living spaces.’

Ally at Dowsing & Reynolds agrees, ‘In 2025, we expect to see more natural and organic materials as part of modern lighting fixtures as people find more ways to connect with nature and improve their wellbeing. When it comes to lighting, we’ll see more designs incorporate natural materials and elements such as rattan, wood, bamboo and recycled glass. These introduce warmth and texture into the space, helping to create a calmer atmosphere.’

5. Embrace stripey designs

It’s not just striped sofa upholstery that’s on trend at the moment. Vertically striped lamps are also enjoying a place in the spotlight as this particular motif provides an opportunity to incorporate some pattern (and with that a hint of fun) into a home without going too crazy because stripes are timeless and they will likely never go out of style.

‘When it comes to patterned lamps, vertical stripes are still huge in 2025, with a bold visual that multitasks in creating the illusion of a bigger space. We’re seeing more and more pieces featuring colours that wouldn’t ordinarily be paired together, but complement each other, to make a super eye-catching statement lamp. Think cherry red and millennial pink, duck egg blue and emerald green,’ Marlena at ValueLights says.

6. Include lamps in colour-drenching schemes

Colour drenching remains one of the biggest decorating and paint trends carrying over from 2024 to 2025. And if you are going to immerse a room in one singular colour - or two similar shades with varying undertones in the spirit of double drenching - then incorporating your lighting into the colour scheme will make your space look even more cohesive and considered.

‘One trend that is everywhere at the moment is colour drenching – taking one colour and using that as a theme throughout the room, with everything, from walls to soft furnishings, to lamps, and even radiators, being “drenched” in hues of that colour. In line with colour drenching, sticking to similar colours throughout the room can really add depth and personality to a space without it becoming overbearing,’ Marlena at ValueLights confirms.

7. Use sculptural lights as art

Lighting and lamp design has come a long way in the last couple of years, especially in the more affordable high street category. That’s why the likes of Habitat lamps and the M&S Kirsten table lamp have gone viral for their pretty yet elevated designs.

And in 2025, lamp design is being pushed even further as artistic, sculptural designs are taking centre stage. According to Marlena at ValueLights, it’s especially the ‘fun, fluid shapes’ to look out for.

8. Pick warm and cosy styles

Lighting is one of the most important elements to consider when creating an ambiance in a space. And as the new cosy trend is the overarching mood for 2025, it’s all about warm and cosy lighting styles this year.

‘People are seeking more comfort, warmth, and a sense of relaxation in their living space, where they can really unwind and feel completely at home. In 2025, we’re leaving behind harsh, industrial lighting, and replacing this with warmer, more inviting designs to create your perfect space. Yellows and burnt oranges are on trend for 2025, with these and other warm tones adding an element of sunshine and brightness as we make our way out of winter and into the spring months,’ Marlena at ValueLights says.

Lee at The Soho Lighting Company adds another way to inject some warmth into a room, ‘Copper – this warm-toned metal is set to see a resurgence in popularity, usurping stainless steel as the metal of choice. With its warm tones, it radiates warmth and comfort, creating a welcoming and inviting feel to any space. Its rich colour will add a touch of sophistication and luxe to your interior and it pairs beautifully with both neutral and bold colour schemes.’

Going lamp shopping has never been as fun as this year with so many exciting and playful lighting trends becoming dominant in 2025.
