The latest COVID-19 case numbers from around the states and territories

Here is a quick wrap of each Australian jurisdiction's latest COVID-19 statistics for Thursday, August 18.

Australian Capital Territory

The territory has recorded another 384 COVID-19 infections.

There are 129 people with the virus in hospital. Two of those patients are in intensive care, with one requiring ventilation.

There are currently 2,171 active COVID cases in the territory.

New South Wales

There have been 43 COVID-19-related deaths reported in the state in the past day.

According to NSW Health, the 43 deaths in the past 24 hours include 16 deaths notified through the NSW Registry of Births Deaths and Marriages.

There are  2,046 people in hospital with the virus, 54 of them in intensive care.

The state has recorded 8,149 new cases.

Queensland

There have been 20 COVID-19-related deaths reported in the past 24 hours in Queensland.

There are 448 people in hospital with the virus, with 21 of them in intensive care.

There have been 3,060 new cases of COVID-19 recorded.

Tasmania

Another two Tasmanians have died with COVID-19, a man in his 90s and a woman in her 80s in the state's north.

There are 16 people in hospital being treated specifically for COVID-19, with two of those patients in ICU.

Tasmania has recorded 444 new COVID-19 cases.

Victoria

There are 497 people in hospital with COVID-19, including 27 in ICU, with nine of them requiring ventilation.

The state has reported 46 deaths and 4,416 new COVID-19 cases.

Of today's 46 reported deaths, 36 occurred in the past week, a further 8 deaths occurred in the past fortnight and 2 deaths occurred in late July, according to the Victorian Department of Health.

South Australia

There have been 12 COVID-19-related deaths reported in the state in the past day that date back to August 6.

There are 240 patients in hospital with the virus and eight of them are in intensive care.

The state has recorded 1,170 new COVID-19 cases.

Western Australia

The state has recorded nine COVID-19-related deaths in the latest reporting period, with some of those deaths dating back to July 25.

There are 267 people in hospital with the virus and seven of them in intensive care.

The state reported 2,210 new COVID-19 cases today.

Northern Territory

There have been three COVID-19-related deaths in the territory in the past 24 hours.

There are 40 people in hospital, one of whom is in intensive care.

The Northern Territory has recorded 154 new COVID-19 cases.

Mutations in the COVID-19 virus continue to pose a risk.
