The latest COVID-19 case numbers from around the states and territories

Here's a quick wrap of each Australian jurisdiction's latest COVID-19 statistics for Wednesday, August 31.

New South Wales

Twenty-two people have died with COVID-19 and 1,802 people are being treated in hospital for the virus across New South Wales.

Of those in hospital, 38 people are in intensive care.

The state has recorded 5,434 new cases in the past day.

Victoria

Victoria has recorded 26 COVID-related deaths today, and 2,857 new cases. 

There are 333 people hospitalised with the virus around the state, with 20 in intensive care and five people requiring ventilators.

Tasmania

Tasmania is reporting three deaths related to COVID-19 today.

Two people in Tasmania are being treated in intensive care for COVID, with a total of 28 people hospitalised overall.

Another 269 new cases were recorded overnight.

Queensland

Queensland has reported 14 deaths and 2,294 new COVID cases in 24 hours day.

There are 316 people hospitalised with the virus and 10 in intensive care.

Australian Capital Territory

Health authorities in the ACT have confirmed 236 new COVID cases.

There are 90 people in hospital with the virus, two of whom are in intensive care.

Western Australia

One COVID-related death has been reported in WA today — a woman in her 40s  — which dates back to August 24.

The state has recorded 1,380 new cases of the virus and 228 people were being treated in hospital as of last night.

Northern Territory

The Top End has recorded 123 new COVID-19 cases overnight. 

There are currently 20 people in hospital, but no one is in the ICU.

South Australia

Three COVID-related deaths have been reported in SA today.

The state has recorded 639 new cases of the virus and 116 people were being treated in hospital as of last night, six of them in ICU.

Mutations in the COVID-19 virus continue to pose a risk.
