The Last Of Us viewers defend Joel following his heartbreaking decision in season finale

The Last Of Us viewers have come out in force to defend Joel after he was forced to make an impossible decision in season one's finale episode.

The latest instalment follows Joel and Ellie as they finally make it to their destination and reunite with the Fireflies, only for things to take a heartbreaking turn.

The newest episode of the hit HBO show is a rollercoaster of emotions, with Ellie's backstory finally being revealed.

Spoiler alert, Ellie was infected with the Cordyceps virus from birth which the Fireflies believe has led to her immunity.

After meeting with the Fireflies, Joel learns that the only way to extract a possible cure from Ellie is to open up her brain.

He immediately realises the surgery would kill her and, unable to face losing her, Joel goes on a violent rampage, killing those inside the hospital.

When Ellie wakes up after being given aesthetic, Joel lies to her and says the Fireflies had given up trying to find a cure after other people came forward who were also immune.

He also said he was barely able to get them both out of the hospital alive after an attack from raiders.

Taking to Twitter, fans have defended Joel's murderous rampage and said he made the right decision when lying to Ellie.

"Joel did nothing wrong, was too f***ing nice to the Fireflies, and the Fireflies got what they f***ing deserved," one fan said.

Another commented: "Last of Us was decent. Probably would have made the same decision Joel did."

"When I first played The Last of Us I wasn't convinced that Joel's choice to save Ellie was a good

"Now that I'm a parent and watching the show, I 100% agree with him and would also do anything to save my kid," a third fan tweeted.

Another agreed: "Joel actions are justified. He was right. I would do the same thing for my nephews. I would let the world burn if that meant they could see a another tomorrow."
