Back in 2023, The Last Of Us actor Bella Ramsey came out to the public as non-binary. Now, a couple of years later, they acknowledge that the admission had pros and cons.
Speaking to The Guardian, the 21-year-old admitted that although they recognise the overall good of living as their authentic self publicly, there’s a part of them that regrets their decision.
“Part of me looks back and I wish that I didn’t, because I didn’t want it to become a headline and a big thing,” they said.
“Obviously it was going to, and I didn’t really understand that at the time.”
After some reflection, Bella recognises that the headlines and the attention was a bit overwhelming.
“I wasn’t really prepared for that. But on the other hand, people have said to me that it’s been very helpful for them seeing some representation,” they continued.
“So it’s been a mixed bag, but overall, I think it was a good thing, just for me living more freely, without feeling like I’m keeping a secret.
“But now I’m like, ‘I’ll talk about it, but I don’t want it to be the focus any more.’ I guess I’m just quite chill with it. And I want everyone else to be as chill with it basically.”
Although Bella says it’s been a journey, they say they don’t mind talking about their gender identity — they just don’t want it to be ‘the focus’ and want everyone to ‘be chill’ about it.
Soooo fair.
After landing their first huge role as Lyanna Mormont in Game Of Thrones when they were only 11, Bella has grown up in the public eye.
And, in a chat with British Vogue, the actor revealed that they had been diagnosed with autism during filming for The Last Of Us season two.
“The diagnosis was freeing,” Bella said.
“It enables me to walk through the world with more grace towards myself about not being able to do the easy everyday tasks that everyone else seems to be able to do.
“The label of being autistic has been so helpful to me because that’s helped me to understand myself, but gender and sexuality-wise, labels do not feel comfy for me in any capacity, because I feel like I’m putting myself into a box. I feel trapped.”
While we can only imagine how difficult it must have been for Bella to navigate their gender identity so publicly, they’ve become an inspiration for gender fluid and non-binary people all over the world.
