HBO just released the trailer for season two of post-apocalyptic drama The Last Of Us, and teased a healthy heaping of new monsters, characters and (of course) an onslaught of new heartbreaking moments that we can expect to see.
The trailer debuted at a South by Southwest (SXSW) panel featuring the show’s cast and production team on Saturday, including Pedro Pascal, Bella Ramsey, and show runners Craig Mazin and Neil Druckmann.
The 2023 HBO TV show is based on the 2013 Naughty Dog video game of the same name, also written and directed by Druckmann.

Expect to cry a whole lot this upcoming season… (Source: HBO)
What is the plot of The Last Of Us Season 2?
Whoa, hold your horses there champ!! We only have this new trailer to go off, but here’s what we know so far, based off the game and other hints from the showrunners.
We can most likely assume that the second season will follow the plot of the 2020 sequel game, The Last Of Us Part II, so folks who have played it might know all the stuff that’s about to go down – we recommend keeping the tissues close by for this one.
The trailer begins with Ellie (Bella Ramsey) wandering through an abandoned building, seemingly hiding (or hunting??) from someone, before showing an unknown man’s arm and watch and shots of a makeshift graveyard.
Joel (Pedro Pascal) then appears in a new scene, asking “you OK?” to Ellie, who appears to be thinking about something, as well as a montage of clips of the pair living in the Wyoming settlement they’ve been living in for five years since the end of season one.

“You OK?” NO. I AM NOT. (Source: YouTube/Max)
Joel’s nephew, Benny, is then heard talking to his uncle over the montage of soldiers trudging through snow and attempting to withstand a wave of super-scary mushroom monsters coming at them.
There’s also explosions and guns, so expect a sick amount of action heading to our screens soon.
The most important scene – IMHO – is between main protagonists Joel and Ellie, with the latter accusatorily saying “you swore” to Joel.
This is perhaps in reference to the discovery made at the end of season 1, which showed Joel lying to Ellie by telling her immunity to the fungal disease cannot be used in a potential cure, due to the fact that she would be killed by doctors to create the medicine.

When will The Last Of Us season 2 premiere?
You will be able to stream The Last Of Us season 2 on either Foxtel or Max on April 14.
It’s only a bit more than a month away, so there’s heaps of time to check out the first season to get yourself all caught up beforehand.
