Robin Richardson’s letter (22 July) puts me in mind of my late husband’s brother-in-law, Adrian Date, who was a senior member of the judiciary in the former British colony of Guiana (now Guyana). During his retirement in Grenada, he told me that his abiding memory was of being able to sentence criminals to death – while being barred from joining the tennis club because he was black. He was no mean player, and he was eventually admitted to the club.
