The January deal that Newcastle could revisit but they now have AC Milan for company in ambitious bid

Newcastle United remain in the hunt for England international Jesse Lingard ahead of the summer transfer window. The 29-year-old was keen on a loan move to St James' Park for the second half of the season but Manchester United made life complicated by demanding astronomical fees for his services.

Red Devils boss Ralf Rangnick stated that Lingard could still be part of his plans at Old Trafford but he has sparingly used the former West Ham loan star so far in 2022. Lingard's representatives are now preparing for his next move and Chronicle Live has learned that Newcastle are still on a list of possible destinations for the 32-times England winger.

However, Newcastle have been joined by AC Milan on the list of admirers for Lingard and with San Siro side pushing for the Serie A title and Champions League football on the menu, it could prove to be a tempting option for the player. Eddie Howe has made no secret of his respect for Lingard and he dearly wanted to sign him on deadline day, the head coach telling us last month: "Jesse Lingard is a player I have always admired. And that's probably the best thing to say."

But Lingard is certainly interested in life in Milan and made a visit to the city earlier this month, posing for a picture with Rossoneri icon Zlatan Ibrahimovic no less. Yet the challenge of coming to Newcastle has always interested Lingard and there has been open dialogue between the Magpies and his people for many months now.

One thing seems certain for Lingard and that is that he is heading for the exit door at Man United having failed to agree a new deal. Rangnick has never closed the door on Lingard and said last month: "So now it’s up to him, the group is a little bit smaller now. If he shows up in training he has all the chances to get game-time here."
