Early Career and Education

Can you share with us how your journey into medicine began?

My journey into medicine began with a fascination for the human body and a desire to make a tangible difference in people’s lives. I was drawn to surgery because of its immediate impact; you can see the results of your work in real-time. After completing my medical degree from St. Louis University School of Medicine, I was fortunate to train at some of the most prestigious institutions, which shaped my approach to patient care and surgery.

What was it like going through the various stages of your training?

Each stage of my training was incredibly challenging but equally rewarding. At Rush Presbyterian St. Luke’s Medical Center, I learned the fundamentals of general surgery, which provided a solid foundation for my specialization in thoracic surgery later at Baylor College of Medicine. The fellowship in cardiovascular surgery was particularly intense, but it was where I truly found my passion for cardiothoracic procedures. The experience taught me not only technical skills but also the importance of empathy and communication with patients and their families.

Professional Reputation and Leadership

How do you maintain a positive reputation in your industry?

Maintaining a positive reputation requires a multifaceted approach. It starts with delivering high-quality work consistently. I also focus on building strong relationships with colleagues and patients. Transparency and honesty are key. When feedback is given, I listen carefully and act on it. It’s also about contributing positively to the culture of the institutions I work with and collaborating across department lines.

What do you consider your key strength at work, and how do you leverage it to achieve success?

Leadership is my key strength. I believe effective communication and authenticity are crucial for any leader. I strive to show up as my best self each day, always ready to learn and adapt. Breaking down complex problems into manageable solutions and showing resilience and empathy toward my team and patients are also important aspects of my approach. These elements combined allow me to effectively guide my team and improve patient outcomes.

The Role of Innovation

How does innovation or new tools impact your career and business strategy?

Innovation is vital in medicine, and I’m always eager to learn about new tools and techniques. However, I proceed with caution—I prefer not to be the first to adopt a new tool but also not the last. I weigh the advantages and disadvantages, learning from those who have used the technology before me. If it proves effective, I integrate it into my practice; otherwise, I set it aside. This balanced approach helps me stay at the forefront of advancements without compromising patient safety.

How do you stay informed about changes in your industry to ensure your brand remains relevant?

Continuous learning is crucial. I read extensively and attend relevant meetings and conferences. This not only keeps me informed about the latest developments but also provides opportunities to network with peers and share insights. It’s important to engage with the broader medical community to remain at the cutting edge of the field.

Patient Interaction and Ethics

How do you build and maintain trust with your patients?

Building trust with patients is about transparency and consistency. I make it a point to keep promises and prioritize patient service. It’s also important to encourage open communication and seek patient feedback regularly. Training my team to uphold these values ensures a consistent patient experience. This commitment to excellence fosters trust and confidence in our care.

Expertise, Achievements, and Vision for the Future

Can you tell us about some of the most significant achievements in your career so far?

Throughout my career, I’ve had the privilege to work with esteemed institutions and serve in the U.S. Air Force Medical Corps. One of my significant achievements has been my role at Froedtert South Medical Group, where I’ve been able to implement patient-centered care practices that have tremendously improved patient outcomes. Additionally, being board-certified by both the American Board of Surgery and the American Board of Thoracic Surgery is a testament to my commitment and expertise in the field.

What do you attribute your professional success to?

Professional success comes from a combination of hard work, continued education, and a passion for the field. I have always sought to provide individualized, evidence-based medical care while maintaining clear communication with patients and their families. This approach not only builds trust but also ensures that the care I provide is tailored to each patient’s unique needs.

How do you handle feedback and criticism to foster professional growth?

I believe in listening fully to feedback and criticism. It’s crucial to ask pertinent questions and show empathy to resolve any issues promptly. Documenting feedback helps ensure it doesn’t recur, and follow-up meetings are essential to reinforce improvements. Encouraging feedback is part of my strategy for continuous professional growth.

What strategies do you use to set and achieve your professional goals?

I utilize the SMART framework to set goals that are Specific, Measurable, Achievable, Relevant, and Time-bound. This method ensures that my goals are both realistic and attainable, allowing for continuous growth and success in my career.

Innovation and Future Outlook

What role does innovation play in your field, and how do you embrace it?

Innovation is pivotal in cardiothoracic surgery as it often leads to improved patient outcomes and more efficient procedures. I remain committed to learning about new tools and techniques, carefully assessing their pros and cons. While I prefer not to be the first to use a new innovation, I am also not the last. If a new technique proves effective, I incorporate it into my practice.

What is your vision for the future of cardiothoracic surgery?

The future of cardiothoracic surgery is exciting, with advancements in minimally invasive techniques and personalized medicine paving the way for more effective treatments. I envision a future where surgeries are less invasive, recovery times are shortened, and outcomes are consistently excellent due to the integration of cutting-edge technology and comprehensive patient care.

How do you see your role evolving with these advancements?

As these advancements continue, my role will evolve to focus more on integrating these technologies into patient care.
