The influential ally of Rangers boss Clement at Belgium FA after Tedesco sacked

Philippe Clement was made a favourite for the Belgium job after mentor Vincent Mannaert was appointed FA sports director last year.

Now, speculation over the Rangers manager being in the running for the national team post has resurfaced after Dominic Tedesco was sacked.

The Belgian FA confirmed Tedesco will no longer lead the national team having taken the decision to relieve him of his duties following a "detailed evaluation".

Quickly, rumours of Clement being a contender to replace Tedesco have emerged with the Rangers manager previously named on a five-man shortlist by the FA.

Thierry Henry, Hein Vanhaezebrouck, Sergio Conceicao and Hervé Renard were the other four names on the list when reports emerged in November.

Mannaert has been vocal in his praise for Clement with the pair enjoying a lengthy relationship that first began as players.

Mannaert worked closely with Clement at Club Brugge where he appointed the Rangers boss as manager and lifted six titles at the club.

Previously, discussing his immense respect for Clement, Mannaert said: "We had great results in the Champions League at Club Brugge and had a draw with PSG - with Messi, with Neymar, with Mbappe - and we had a draw in the Bernabeu against Real Madrid. And we had great celebrations when we won the title.

"He is a very hard-working person, he believes in hard work and preparation. As a player, he was also a leader, he was a captain for many years at Brugge. You see that leadership coming back as a coach, he leads a group.

"He prepares himself very well. He is analytically very strong, he is able to get out the angle of the opponent and he combines that with emotional leadership."

Clement stated recently he would never quit his post as Rangers manager.

“No, no never,” Clement said. “I am not a quitter, I am not a quitter. I am somebody who knows what he really wants and we’re going to get that together."
