The incredible West Country train ride that ends with a delicious pub lunch

One of the nicest activities to do on a sunny day is enjoying a long walk and then a sit in a beautiful country pub afterwards - and luckily the West Country is filled with hundreds of beauty spots for this.

There is nothing quite like sitting in a pub garden in the countryside, glass of beer in hand and eating some great pub food with the sun on your face. The country pubs across our county are famous, and the best thing is you are never that far from the nearest town or city, reports Somerset Live.

Whether it's a walk in Bristol or the surrounding villages or towns, you don't have to travel far to find a stunning green location.

Most of us take the car when we want to leave the city behind and escape to the country, but it is far better to go by train. It benefits the environment, you avoid extortionate petrol prices and there is also the very sizeable consideration you can enjoy a drink or two in the happy knowledge you are not getting behind the wheel.

One great little pub journey that takes 30 minutes from Bristol Temple Meads station is the charming village of Freshford, where you can walk to the well-known Inn at Freshford, a lovely old pub with a great beer garden.

The trains are very frequent, some of them stop at Bradford on Avon, another lovely destination, and it can take around 27 minutes en route to Portsmouth Harbour.

It is a very pleasant ride into the countryside, there are lots of trains to choose from and you can enjoy a great pub lunch and few drinks without worrying about driving or parking. The Inn at Freshford has undergone many changes in recent years but now seems to have settled and it is a charming 16th-century pub with great walks around the village and by the river in Freshford.

As well as pub classics, the pub serves delicious Middle Eastern dishes and vegetarian and fish dishes as well. The garden is fantastic, overlooking the valley with a great new wooden structure with heated patio so you can while away the hours well into the evening.

The great thing about the Inn at Freshford is it serves food all day from 12pm-9pm so you are not tied to lunch or supper times. We really love this pub, it has always been a favourite, and the train ride is the icing on the cake.
