The incredible things you can get at the new Ty Melin bakery opening in Roath, Cardiff

Tŷ Melin, one of Cardiff’s most highly regarded bakeries, is finally opening its doors on Roath’s Wellfield Road tomorrow, Saturday, November 20.

Owned by Angharad Conway and Lance Gardner, the couple have worked in some of the UK’s most prestigious bakeries including London’s Harrods Bakery as well as Richard Bertinet in Bath and Hobbs House Bakery in the Cotswolds.

Even though Tŷ Melin already has a branch in the Bayscape development in Cardiff Marina, the arrival of their Wellfield Road branch will mean their baked goods are a lot more accessible to residents of Roath and its surrounding areas.

From their extensive range of pastries, cakes, bread and biscuits, we’ve rounded up some of their incredible items which are not to be missed.

Croissant bomb

Tŷ Melin’s signature bake is their croissant bomb and it’s the one that social media goes crazy for. A crisp sugary exterior surrounds light pastry layers stuffed to the brim with a changing roster of fillings including lemon meringue, pistachio custard and salted caramel peanut butter.

Almond pain au chocolat

(Ed Gilbert)

One of life’s biggest questions is “pain au chocolat or almond croissant?” Thankfully, Tŷ Melin’s almond pain au chocolat means you don’t have to decide. Gorgeously light and flaky, it’s absolutely stuffed with almond paste and chocolate.

Canelé

(Ed Gilbert)

Slightly less well-known than some of Tŷ Melin’s other bakes, canelés are small French pastries which pack a punch of flavour. A toasty caramelised crust gives way to a light and soft custardy interior.

Sourdough bread

(Ed Gilbert)

It might be the least flashy thing they sell but Tŷ Melin’s sourdough bread is first class. Thin and crisp of crust with a light and airy crumb with a delicate tang, it’s delicious simply slathered with butter.

Cookie

(Ed Gilbert)

Tŷ Melin’s cookies are a big step up from something out of a packet. Their whopper of a chocolate chip and hazelnut cookie is crisp, gooey and loaded with chocolate and nuts.

Sausage roll

The recipe for this sausage roll took two years to develop and you can see why. A cheese infused smoked sausage is wrapped in flaky laminated pastry and dusted with mixed seeds.

Tŷ Melin Bakery pie

Tŷ Melin Bakery pie isn’t much to look at but don’t let that put you off. It's addictively buttery, brown sugary, oaty and a little salty with a crisp flapjack-like edge and a soft fudgy interior.

Ham and cheese croissant

Like a cross between a ham and cheese toasted sandwich and croissant, this pastry is absolutely stuffed with thickly sliced meat and tangy caramelised cheese.

Mince pie

Tŷ Melin’s mince pies are absolutely massive. Crisp pastry, big flavoured mince meat and a crumble topping combine to make something seriously luxurious. And they’re vegetarian and nut free too.

Cake slice

Tŷ Melin’s cakes have layers and layers of flavour. They’re available by the slice in varieties such as chocolate, banana, peanut butter and salted caramel (yes, that’s all in one cake).
