The hottest places in Wales on Monday, July 11, as record broken

Wales recorded its hottest day of the year so far on Monday as the mercury reached 28.7°C in Cardiff's Bute Park. The record could go tumbling in the coming days as 34°C is forecast for Cardiff on Monday.

The previous hottest day had been recorded in the park on June 17, when temperatures rose to 28.4°C. In England, the temperature peaked at 32°C in Northolt, west London.

England’s hottest day so far this year remains the 32.7°C recorded at Santon Downham, in Suffolk, on June 17. The warmest day on record in the UK was the 38.7°C scorcher recorded at Cambridge Botanic Garden in July 2019.

The Met Office has issued an amber weather warning for extreme heat across parts of the UK ahead of further soaring temperatures this week. The rare warning states there could be a danger to life or potential serious illness as a result of the scorching temperatures. Other issues could include road closures and delays or cancellations to rail and air travel.

Monday is expected to have been the warmest weather this week with highs in Cardiff.

Tuesday (July 12) is forecast to be cloudier and slightly cooler with highs of 25°C, and there was some rain recorded in Anglesey this morning. Welsh weather forecaster Derek Brockway said that Tuesday will be cloudier and less hot, and that it will be "cooler and fresher" Wednesday to Friday but still warm.

The Met Office forecast for Wales says: "A cloudier day than on Monday but some bright or sunny spells at times and the chance for the odd light shower in the afternoon. Light winds. Maximum temperature 25°C.

"Staying quite cloudy through the evening and overnight with, perhaps, some light rain or drizzle over high ground. Turning drier as cloud clears through the early hours. Minimum temperature 9°C."
