‘The highest honour’: Old footage shows Denis Law's love for national team

RESURFACED footage of late Scottish football legend Denis Law recalling his time in the game has been widely shared on social media.

Scotland’s only Ballon d'Or winner passed away on Friday aged 84 following a battle with Alzheimer's.

The 32 second clip has gone viral on social media wherein a teary-eyed Law proudly remarks that playing for Scotland was the highest of honours.

“Of all the things that you’ve won or been involved in, there’s nothing better than…the highest honour,' he said.

Following a brief pause to compose himself, he finished: “Being selected to play for your country, that’s the highest.”

The clip was shared by Stephen Flynn, who paid tribute to the forward by saying that Law was “the greatest Scot to ever play the game".

He added: “A man who loved Aberdeen and who, as patron of the charity built in his honour, gave so much back to communities across the city.

“A privilege to have been in his company. Rest in peace, Denis.”

The Denis Law Legacy Trust, established by the footballer in 2006, is a children’s charity, that supports young people to thrive through free to access sport and creative activities.

The trust has engaged over 134,000 participants since its inception.

John Swinney also paid tribute to the Manchester United legend, saying that he was “an inspiring footballer of immense skill and talent.

The First Minister continued: “His record of scoring goals for Scotland made a special place for him in all of our hearts. My condolences to his family. May he rest in peace.”

A statement from the Law family read: “It is with a heavy heart that we tell you our father Denis Law has sadly passed away. He fought a tough battle but finally he is now at peace.

“We would like to thank everyone who contributed to his wellbeing and care, past and much more recently.

“We know how much people supported and loved him and that love was always appreciated and made the difference. Thank you.”
