The 'hidden gem' Glasgow cafe run by husband and wife duo serving 'afternoon tea perfection'

We're always keen to promote independent, family-run businesses, especially considering the challenges brought by the pandemic over the past couple of years.

And with it being British Sandwich Week, we were pleasantly surprised to discover that, according to TripAdvisor, a 'hidden gem' cafe run by a husband and wife duo is considered the top-rated sandwich spot in the city.

Perhaps little known outwith the south side of Glasgow, Soup's On and The Cake Lady has quite the loyal following - feedback left by locals on the travel review website has seen it skyrocket up the charts to become one of the city's top 30 restaurants.

But it appears the quaint Cathcart cafe offers more than just 'the best sandwiches', with some customers also enjoying 'afternoon tea perfection' on Clarkston Road.

'Filling bellies to the brim since 2015', Soup's On and The Cake Lady describe themselves as 'your family-run, neighbourhood cafe specialising in all things home made'.

Their extensive menu features the likes of big meaty sandwiches, beautiful home bakes and cakes, soups and scones - all hearty food you can only hope to find in your local cafe.

And customers have been full of praise for the family behind the raved-about eatery, with some even hailing it as 'the best of the best'.

One comment left on TripAdvisor reads: "Honestly the best cafe in the southside of Glasgow by a mile! Anne and Pete are the loveliest couple and serve the most amazing food - whether it be sandwiches, cakes, soup or stew!

"Definitely worth the visit and such a hidden gem! Always look forward to a trip here at the weekend, keep doing you guys."

Another review said: "This has been the best find my family and I have found since lockdown started.

"We stumbled across it on our 'daily exercise' and we have turned it in to a weekly pilgrimage."

One person added: "This is absolutely our favourite place in Glasgow for cake and coffee and cake, with a little side of cake."

And cake aside, the sandwiches are clearly a huge hit.

One customer said Soup's On and The Cake Lady have the 'best sandwiches and cakes for miles around', adding: "We've been lucky enough to sample the delights of Soup's On and the Cake Lady on a weekly basis throughout the various lockdowns and have kept the habit up because of the consistently delicious and inventive sandwich and cake creations."

A further comment added: "We can without doubt say it was the best soup and sandwich we have had in a very long time. Everything home made and the soup was hot and very flavoursome. Paninis and sandwiches were fresh and packed with fillings."

And perhaps a major draw for this much-loved cafe is its afternoon teas, with one person praising them as 'afternoon tea perfection', commenting: "These guys really know what they are doing! Perfect in every way.

"Generously filled tasty sandwiches (none of your boring cucumber sandwiches in sight here!), and a huge selection of perfectly baked cakes, scones and biscuits.

"I’m a baker myself, so I’m picky with where I eat cake. This is by far the best afternoon tea I’ve ever had!"

Their feedback was echoed by another fan of the afternoon tea, who said: "I also had the pleasure of getting a special birthday afternoon tea from here and it’s perhaps the only afternoon tea I’ve ever finished- everything too good to leave a bite!"

And one comment which sums up the love for this place, said: "This is more than just a cafe! It’s a local lifesaver. Got me through the whole of lockdown (we were regulars b4 then ) with its imaginative, wholesome and lovingly prepared and baked soups, sandwiches and cakes.

"It’s such a quirky homely cafe to sit in too and if you go be careful as you’ll be hooked forever.

"Every local community should have a cafe like this! Spreading a little magic."

With over 130 hugely positive reviews, it's clear to why this place is such a hit and certainly deserving of a little shout out.
