The heartwarming letter left at a food bank which has prompted more people to donate

Staff at a foodbank were left feeling 'extremely touched' after receiving a heartwarming letter alongside a recent donation.

Volunteers at the Crossroads Meltham Foodbank, Huddersfield, received a letter with a substantial cash donation to the centre. Foodbank manager Chris Sinclair said he was touched to live and work in a kind-hearted community.

Since sharing details of the letter, Mr Sinclair said other people have now stepped forward to provide help for the foodbank, Yorkshire Live reports.

The letter said: "Dear Meltham Food Bank. I recently got my notice of winter fuel allowance, which is great, BUT as a retired single person, with work and state pensions, I feel that I don't need it as much as some families on low wages. I would like to donate a chunk of it to the Food Bank, and thought that if you spread this message it might encourage one or two others to do the same."

Mr Sinclair took over as manager of the foodbank just a few months ago. After sharing the letter, he said many people have come forward in response to the kind gesture and have provided their own cash donations from winter fuel payments that they don't need.

He said: "It is a lovely letter and I was quite touched by it. It is a brilliant sentiment and has prompted a huge response from followers on our (Facebook) page. Gillian was quite happy with the publicity for the good cause."

He also highlighted the growing demand for foodbank as families continue to struggle with the widening cost of living crisis. Now, volunteers deliver around 80 food parcels a month to households in Meltham, Wilshaw, Helme, and Netherton.

Some people have also been referred to the foodbank by other agencies while others contact them directly for help. Donations can be made to the foodbank via the Crossroads Meltham Foodbank Facebook page.
