The hazards of using Aerosols and how they impact our environment

The personal care industry has experienced tremendous growth in the past few decades, thanks to the innumerable deodorants on the market. These products help us keep fresh, sweat-free, and impart a pleasant fragrance.

However, did you know that the deodorant that you are using is one of the contributors to air pollution? Research also suggests that it contributes to as much air pollution as motor vehicles.

The majority of deodorants are aerosol products that have been used for generations, but in recent decades we’ve come to recognize that they can be dangerous to the environment.

What is an Aerosol spray?

The aerosol spray is filled in a can that contains propellant and a specific solvent. The mixture is enforced out from the container through a small hole present at the top. The opening is under higher pressure when the container’s valve is opened. Due to the higher pressure present inside and its sudden release, an aerosol mist gets formed.

An aerosol spray is a form of gaseous suspension system which creates a gaseous mist of liquid molecules. This dispenser’s technology changes the ingredient inside the container. It gets converted into an aerosol where liquid molecules widely and evenly get dispersed throughout a gas.

1. Toxic IngredientsAerosols have been acknowledged as harmful to the environment by the Environmental Protection Agency. Aerosols tend to contain highly toxic and hazardous components such as xylene, formaldehyde, neurotoxins, and carcinogens.

2.

Impact on the EnvironmentAerosols are also known to heavily impact our surroundings. Studies mentioned that they impact altering the rainfall pattern. NASA has also noted that aerosols are believed to reduce precipitation by causing a decrease in the size of cloud water droplets.

3. Increased Carbon FootprintMany might think that eliminating the ozone-damaging chemicals from such aerosol sprays could make the aerosols entirely safe. But research mentions that whenever you use an aerosol product, you are increasing your carbon footprint. It is due to the compressed gases and hydrocarbons contained in the aerosol.

However, there are still environmentally cautious brands that are much aware of the products they choose to put out for their customers. Brands are shifting towards non-gas mists that contain perfume rather than a vaporizer. Hence, it offers a long-lasting effect to keep you smelling fresh the entire day while also not harming the environment.
