The Guardian named news provider of the year at the British Journalism Awards

The Guardian has won five awards at the 2023 British Journalism Awards; the most of any news organisation this year, including the coveted news provider of the year prize.

Announced during a ceremony in London yesterday (Thursday 14 December), the British Journalism Awards is dedicated to celebrating the best public interest journalism for UK audiences that has real world impact and displays journalistic skill and rigour. The awards include entries from publishers and journalists across print, broadcast and online.

Commenting on the Guardian’s news provider of the year win, the judges said:“This title has shone a light on under-reported parts of the world and campaigned for social justice and environmental change with its investigations this year. And it has even investigated difficult truths from its own past while delivering a mass audience and achieving financial sustainability.”.

The Guardian is now simultaneously the holders of news provider of the year from the British Journalism Awards and daily newspaper of the year from the Press Awards; the other major journalism awards in the UK.

The Guardian also won four awards for individual journalists in the reporting categories.

Anna Isaac won the business, finance and economics journalism category for her investigation into the Confederation of British Industry (CBI), which the judges described as “a real scoop which has had wide-ranging impact”, while Emily Dugan won the crime and legal journalism category for her reporting on the case of Andrew Malkinson, which the judges said was “exemplary campaigning work”.

Rachael Healy won the art and entertainment journalism category for her stories last year about the Britain’s Got Talent judge David Walliams, which the judges said was “well executed”, while William Ralston won in the sports journalism category for his “wonderful, professional and in-depth” work on the inside world of Premier League referees.

Katharine Viner, editor-in-chief, Guardian News & Media says:

“The Guardian’s news provider of the year win is a testament to the outstanding news coverage, investigations, multimedia, interviews and features that we publish every day around the world. These awards celebrate the power of the Guardian’s public interest journalism, its real world impact and the journalistic skill and rigour of our reporting.”

The Guardian was also highly-commended across a number of categories, including for its Cotton Capital series exploring how transatlantic slavery has shaped the Guardian, Manchester, Britain and the world (social affairs, diversity and inclusion journalism); The Bruno & Dom Project (campaign of the year); The Guardian and Watershed Investigations’ major mapping project on chemical pollution (energy and environment journalism); and Simon Hattenstone for his “fine writing” (features journalism).
