Many will have noticed the presence of the King's Coronation Guards over this weekend, after they popped up in the background of broadcasts and photos. The soldiers' role is to protect King Charles III, and they can usually be found outside of Royal properties like Buckingham Palace.
As many would imagine, the Guards are highly trained and go through a gruelling workout regime to ensure that they can carry out their role. While the King himself is fond of fitness, and was even known to participate twice daily in a military-style workout, the Guards' routine takes things to another level.
According to an expert, the elite soldiers can expect to carry out hours upon hours of training each day. And training can consist of much more than just lifting weights and long runs.
In a 2022, Channel 5 documentary, 'The Queen's Guards: On Her Majesty's Service', viewers got a look into the lives of the soldiers and officers of the 1st Battalion Coldstream Guards. In the documentary, Captain Freddie Ruscombe-King said: "We're not their mates. It only takes one small error on their behalf to realise that there is a very distinct line between us and them."
The documentary focussed on drills and what Captain Ruscombe-King called "people skills", but now a fitness expert has deep-dived into the Guards' gruelling workout regime. Ben Dillon, BHSc MST, PT, stated that the Guards train for up to six hours per day, focusing on strength, endurance, and flexibility.
The exercise is a combination of weightlifting, running, callisthenics, and yoga ensures a well-rounded approach to fitness. Guards and participants also maintain a strict diet, with a focus on lean protein, whole grains, fruits, and vegetables, according to Ben, a writer at Exercise With Style.
After looking into the King's Guards' routine, Ben has shared a number of tips and tricks that they seemingly use which you can include in your workout routine. From a balance of strength and cardio to movements that improve mobility, there could be some tidbits worth picking up.
He says: "Compound exercises are an efficient way to build overall strength and muscle mass, as they engage multiple muscle groups simultaneously, leading to greater gains in less time."
"A well-rounded fitness regimen includes both cardiovascular exercise and resistance training." The expert adds. "This balanced approach enhances endurance, strength, and overall health while reducing the risk of injury."
Ben continues: Functional fitness exercises not only strengthen your muscles but also enhance your ability to perform everyday tasks with ease, making them a valuable addition to any workout routine."
The expert also recommends dedicating time into stretching and mobility exercises, such as yoga or foam rolling. Dillon advises, "Don't underestimate the importance of flexibility and mobility. These components help maintain balance, prevent injury, and promote efficient movement patterns during your workouts."
